Default Puerto Rico Vacation ???'s

Thinking about heading to Puerto Rico in the late January
to early Feb. time frame and am looking for some insights
regarding where to stay to be in proximity to some historic
areas and fishing. Will be staying for a week, give or take
a few days and I'll be looking to charter something in the
30' range for 2 people.

Any thoughts???

San Juan is set up for tourists, the rest of PR isn't.... cool fort, great "old" downtown and good fishing charters....things to do...camuy caves, beaches on the NW side, phosphous bay....it's on the SW side...don't remember name..go at night...skip the rain forest.....real local food...we rented a car and drove all over the place....it's not that big a place....150mi X 50mi? or so...there was a ferry to an island on the SE side that we didn't get to do...looks amazing...day trip...have fun...

San Juan is great. Old downtown very nice. Stayed at "El San Juan" (I think) very nice place.

Careful if you venture out of tourist areas. There is a park or old fort near downtown that was clearly not safe. I did not look into fishing, but water is beautiful.

I used to live there, beautiful place. Definitely San Juan, If you want to see beautiful islands and cristal clear water you should take the ferry to Culebras or Vieques. You have to take the ferry from Fajardo (east side), very cheap and it takes about an hour to get to the Island. You can also go to Palomino Island, this is about 10 to 15 minutes and the water is cristal clear. The rain Forest is nice, is about 45 minutes from San Juan. You can travel the whole island in one day is 100mi X 50mi. If you drive around the island you'll find a lot of nice beaches. Like some one else said, just be careful where you go. San Juan is beautiful during the night, you'll love it, again just be careful. Stay were most people are and you'll be OK.

Definitely Old San Juan, El Morro (fort very similar to St Augustine), eat local food (is great), ask for Alcapurrias, Pasteles, there is a lot of great food to eat there. If you don't like any of that you'll find basically the same fast food that you would find here in the US.

I don't know much about fishing but I know there is a lot of fishing charters in San Juan.

BTW if you want to go to Palomino, Culebra or Vieques on a sail boat let me know I can contact you with someone I know in Fajardo. Here's his web site http://sailpuertorico.com/, he is a very nice guy. I don't know about the price but his sail boat is beautiful. I use to live next to him.

If you need more info don't exitate to PM me.

Hope this helps.

Stayed in Vieques for a week and to say the least, it was incredible.. Great food and great scenery. Went diving off a couple beaches where there were reefs and snagged grouper and lobster. Took an inshore guide to the bio bay (which is a must at night) and was not impressed. I ended up throwing the net because the dude was pancaking every toss. Ended up somehow draining his batteries (on a ranger bay boat) after an hour of fishing. One snook was caught. I heard the flats fishing is where it's at though. Didn't really look into offshore. Can give you plenty more info if needed. My buddy has a house there.
