Surprised to hear you say that. While I don't fish further out that 9/10 miles I know there are a tons of guys that go out. Check with Jagsare1 here or check out the NE Florida section of the FS Forum.

This would qualify as one of those off years. There has been a lot of rain in the state and it eventually emptys (fresh water) out the mouth of the St Johns river. Then there is also a cold thermocline that has been hanging around off shore keeping the trolling fish farther out. It is said that too much west wind blows the warm water off the top and the cold water wells up from the deep. This is confirmed by the type of bottom fish being caught and divers reports.
I have caught Wahoo and Dolphin 14-18 miles out in the past, even hooked a Sail 14 miles out but lost it. Kings would normally be on the beach on out from mid June to Oct depending on water temp. Trolling fish can even be caught 30-35 miles out (BR reef) sometimes all year depending on water temp.
The Fl Sportsman Radio Show is on saturday mornings on 930 AM from 7-9 am. This is the best place to get reports of what's going on.

Summer is the "down" time for trolling, unless you like kingfishing. In the fall we get the migrating sailfish, the late fall and wintertime wahoo fishing is the best on the eastcoast in my opinion and in the spring the wahoo are still around and we get a great dolphin run. I think the offshore fishing here is the best in Florida, just not in the summer. Oh, as previously posted, you have to run far.
