Question Heading to Marathon this labor day weekend..fishing report?

Heading down to marathon for the labor day weekend and wondering if anyone has a recent fishing report? What should I be targeting, inside, outside..etc. taking the wife and a friend of hers..so I am IT..as far as fishing but would like to put some meat on the table.. Suggestions appreciated..any new bars/restaurants in the last year? GPS spots? Rigs? How about snorkeling...besides sombero light?

As far as new restaurants, you have to try Chappys, its in Marathon right before you go over the 7 mile bridge. Its open air, TIki Hut style, with a free pool. the food and service are just OK, but the view and the pool are both outstanding.

Fishing is on the slow side right now. A few Tuna at the Hump, some snapper on the reef, not a lot. I think the mangrove are soemwhere between the reef and the bay-not a good bite in either locattion right now.

If you get tired of seafood, try the BBQ place on the north side just before 7 mile bridge.GREAT bacon cheese burger. They are located right in front of Capt Pips boats. I just got back on Sat. from a week down there. Caught some yellowtails and some small 2# Mango,s. Was having motor prpblems so we stayed on the reef. We used plenty of Chum. Got that from K-Mart. (cheaper bait). Also there is an ice machine at the south intersection of CoCo Plum rd. 16# bags @$2.00 or you fill up your ice chest 20#@ 2.00. Moon will be full this Fri so if your not afraid to fish at night that would be the ticket. If not at night get there early AM.

Looe Key is the best snorkeling -- easy run from Marathon. Calm water and wind makes it great for snorkeling right now, fishing has been spotty at best. Castaway's has re-done their dining area and has dockage. Burdine's has dockage, Keys Fisheries sort of has dockage, the Island Restaurant has dockage -- all good choices to please the women by using the boat for something other than fishing [or at least put them in the mood to tolerate some fishing].

Where in particular on Looe Key? Easy enough to get to on a calm day in a rented 21'?

Due west of Sombrero Light [or about 5 miles south of Big Pine Key/Little Palm Island]. Easy run from Marathon in good conditions. We often run from Cudjoe Key up to Marathon for lunch and stuff [Burdine's,Castaways, etc.] in our boat -- and have even run out to Looe Key on the way back for snorkeling.

Looe is at least 17 miles from marathon (Sombrereo) if you figure the east end of the 7 mi, bridge is mm 47 Little Torch ( where Little Palm is) is at 29 . Wish I had the #'s to the "cans" ( off Sunshine Key) right here but it can be a parking lot there too..find your own piece of happiness hit the reefs edge 50-90ft and watch the bottom, Last couple of times out seen sails busting bait and more bonito in 90 feet than you want to tangle with while trying to catch yellow tail.
