Default Scallop Season 09!

Anyone hear about early season predictions/ counts? I know all of the hotels are full in Homosassa every weekend til late August. Looks like I will be running up for the day on the 11th. Was hoping to spend the night somewhere but does not look like a possibility now.

Here are the numbers for the preseason scallop count. Last year was a great season but your gonna have to do a lot more work this year.

I have always wanted to go scalloping but the wife and daughter aren't interested. One of these years I'll get a few buddies together and head over.

Wow, those numbers don't look good at all. We'll see how it pans out.

I went last week and seen plenty around my area, not as good as last year by no means.I still see no reason not to get a limit in a couple hours.

remember if your going to scallop make sure someone stays on board or use 2 anchors and make sure the set good.each year we get calls and find boats with nobody inside where it blew off while they where in the water.be carefull!!!

We went Friday, Saturday and Sunday and got our limit every day out of Crystal River. There was several boats with us and just about everyone got their limits.

I had the same experience at the St. Marks River. To me they were just as plentiful as last year.

Glad to hear the good reports. I am boating up from Port Richie on Saturday if the weather is nice. Found a place to stay overnight. How does the meat size look? smaller than usual? Last year we had some big fatties.

They looked (and tasted) really good. Nice size. Should get more plentiful before the season ends.

quick question for all of the scallop experts in the port st. joe / appalachicola area. what size boat is preferred for getting into the prime scallop areas? 21 mako draw too much water? might be time to buy a used 15/16 ft boat for scalloping and playing in the bay.

The Mako should be fine. We went in a 23' Grady, no problems.

For the port st joe area..... go to 3-5' *at least*... off Blacks Island - LOADED last Wed - Fri. Your Mako should be fine. You can always walk out but it was like a mile walk to get to those depths. A Kayak would have been perfect too.

You will be fine but you will need to watch the water depth and please don't motor through the grass! There are some channels which cut through the flats on the S/SW side of Blacks Island. A good map will show them and if you go on a sunny day with not much wind you should be able find your way no problem. There are definitely some sandbars that will stick your Mako no problem if not careful, but I've seen 25' Mako's in there as well. Also, you will need to put in at PSJ public boat launch or the ramp way out on the cape.
