I'm planning a trip to the Bahamas in 09 but haven't decided where to go. Might spend a month or two if things work out or may leave the boat over there for the time and go back and forth. I have spent time at Green Turtle, Marsh Harbor, Treasure, Walkers, Spanish Cay, the Exumas, Cat Island, Chub, etc. Looking for feedback or suggestions on areas you really liked. We enjoy fishing, diving and relaxing in the islands.
Thanks

Wow, it sounds like you're more experienced in the Bahamas than most folks on this forum.
I'm planning a couple of long weekends at Grand this April followed up by a week out in Marsh Harbor. The only places I've been to are West End and Lucaya. Lucaya is very tourist oriented, which can be nice if the crew or wives appreciate the casino, shops and restaurants after a day of fishing. I'm not a diver, but there are plenty of dive sites on the reef. Fishing has been better for me April-June to the south, but apparently there are folks who really chase the Wahoo during the winter months. West End is less touristy, and I wouldn't hesitate spending a week there diving and fishing.
Can you offer any opinions of your own about Grand/Walkers and Marsh?
Grand is an okay island although if you were taking family not a place that I would recommend. Most of the restaurant and living facilities are pretty rugged. Rosie (a local Bahamian legend) owns most of the places on Grand at least around the marina. It's okay but limited on whats available.
You cannot stay on Walkers but you can clear customs their. Marsh Harbor is a great place to take family or go with the guys. Its a larger island that has shopping (grocery store, restaurants, etc) with some very quaint marinas as well as a large marina. You have easy access from there to many other places such as Treasure Cay, Green Turtle, Elbow Cay, Man O War, Great Guana, Spanish Cay, etc. Fishing is good around all of these islands although during summer months the trolling slows down.
Hope that helps and thanks for your information. I did spend time at West End last year at the Ginn resort. Nice place.

Wow- a month or two would be awesome!
We spent 2 weeks kicking around Andros this last summer and had a great time. Not much in the way of civilization or amenities there, but GREAT fishing and diving. Here is a link to our log from that trip:

Try cape eleuthera for anchorage. you can pop over to Cat if you like because its so close. Drive up to Governors Harbor for dinner at Tippy's. I like wading in savanna sound for bones.
My fiance and I are going to the bahamas in Aug or September. We are staying on Grand Bahama Island...and tips as to what to do? and good land or even charter fishing?

If you're not locked into GBI... I'd spent a little more money and head to the Abacos... Marsh Harbor. From there you are connected to all the other nearby Abacos "hot spots" by cheap ferry rides or invites by friendlyyachtsters. Don't forget to go to Nippers on Sunday and steak night at the Jib Room. You'll be rubbing dirty elbows with floating fun loving cocktailing snowbirds. A visit to GBI cannot holda candle to the Abacos... IMO.
I agree strongly with the recommendation to go to the Abacos... unless you are going just for party and gambling. If you really want to experience the Bahamas (and it is wonderful) go to Marsch, Treasure or Green Turtle and then do some island hoping to Great Guana, Hopetown, etc. I have been to all of the Abacos and several points on Grand Bahama and they are very different places. If you want to experience the lifestyle and culture of an Island Nation, see the Abacos.
