Default Moving to the Florida Keys...

Some where down the road I plan on moving to the Florida keys. I LOVE FISHING!!! If I'm a Republican will I be out numbered? I just don't understand Florida. Fishing is everything to your state but yet it was won by a Democratic that is BIG TIME anti-fishing.

The Keys are a really different place. I own a rental property with 2 partners in Marathon. You'll find that almost everything is tougher to get and takes longer to get in the Keys. For instance , if you need something from Home depot, You'll find them spaced about 50 miles apart (there's one in Marathon and the next one is in Key west). Florida is also a very large, diverse state. I happen to live in Martin County on the east coast which is considered a conservative county (we voted 2 to1 for McCain/Palin). By the way, the fishing here is quite diverse too. We have ocean access via the St Lucie Inlet, river fishing on the St lucie and Indian Rivers and if you like, fresh water fishing is only a short trailer ride away in Lake Okeechobee. A crossing to the Bahamas is only 65 miles or so from the St Lucie inlet to West End and the gulf stream is usually around 10 to 12 miles offshore. We also have some good swordfishing areas nearby. Overall, Florida voted for Obama by about 2.8 percent ( 4,282,074 for Obama versus 4,045,624 for McCain). Hope this info helps, Jim Palm City

Since you don't understand Florida as you say, come stay for the month of September when it is hot as blazes. If you can survive the heat, mosquitoes, no see ums, and train of hurricanes making their way across the Atlantic, then you're in. Otherwise, I'd stay put if I were you. And who is BIG TIME ANTI-FISHING?

Florida is a pretty diverse state we accept almost anybody even the misinformed. We've a lot of people from Mass that made a good living as democrats and changed party affiliation when they retired and came to Florida. Maybe you can buy a nice water front place and have one of your republican buddiesbuild and oil wheel in your front yard.

Prop Blast,

I'm sorry if you can't handle the truth but your state voted for Barack Obama. That is not a blanket statement. I'm confused because BO is not fisherman friendly. Do your own research on the women he put in charge of NOAA... have you ever heard of MPA's? If you haven't you will soon.

Marvin 177,

People like you make me laugh.. all that you guys want is alternative energy. Just like all the Dem-Asses on Long Island NY, when it was time to put up windmills on the south-shore they all bitched and mooned that it would be an eye sore. Guess what the plan was nixed.

Thank you on the info about McCain/Obama. I think some people took things the wrong way. Up here in NY we are terrified by the person Obama has named to head up NOAA. She belongs to a group called PEW charitable trust. VERY ANIT-FISHING.

Since you are in a laughing mood I'll give you something to laugh about! I live on what was said to be the last unaltered inlet (by man) in the entire state of Florida Nassau Sound. This area is a habitat for many migratory birds, nesting ground for sea turtles and is where the world record flounder was caught. On it's northern shore is Amelia Island and pretty exclusive area. To theSouth is a state park Big Talbot Island.A few years ago the wealthy republicans on Amelia Island lobbied to have a rock jetty 1400' long and 20' wide built on the north shore. The reason given was to stop erosion. Incidently it's been proven this doesn't work and causes more harm and erosion. Despite opposition from others like myself they went ahead with the jetty spending a pretty good chuck of change. Today as predicted the south end of the inlet is filling inand causing a popular kayak trail and fishing creekSimpson Creek to fill in. This is destroying nesting grounds for birds, turtles and who knows what else. The breeding grounds for shrimpare being destroyed at the same time ultiamtely destroying the fishing. All this was done in reality so the wealthy on Amelia Island could perhaps negotiate the inlet with the big sport fishermen vessels. As far as fishing regulations I just made a trip fromJacksonville FL to Oriental NC on the ICW. NC is known to have probably the most unrestricted fishing requlations. Let me go on record to say I'm not in favor of over regulating but I couldn't believe the gill nets along the banks of the ICW in NC. From the south end of Bogue Sound to Carolina Beach they were nearly non stop. Perhaps some of these over reacting libs should maybe say something? As far as the windmills you speak of I worked in heavy industiral constuction all my life building mostly power houses and wind farms. I'd be the last person on the planet to be opposed to thier construction in the right areas. This is a big country and with modern methods of power transmission their is absolutely no reason to build these things in senic, enviromentally sensativeor heavily populated areas. You're right I am in favor of alternate energy sources even though it does take money out of my pocket it's whats best for America. Don't be put off by my opinions I assureyou my ideasrepresent a very small precentage of Florida residents you'll find many people with the same views as you through out Florida. Thats what great about America. Come on down there's room for everybody.

Kirk,

You crack me up -- thanks for the laugh I'm 99.9999999% sure Obama has put NO ONE in charge of ANYTHING -- he's not in charge either! Talk to us again when he's in office and those 3rd and 4th tier political appointees are are being named in Apr or May.

MPAs are nothing new, they've been put in place since the Clinton Administration if I recall, and some have come into existance during the Bush Administration.

Get your stuff together and please stay home.

Not trying to turn this into a politcal debate but the January BoatUS magazine has what looks to be a pretty interesting article intitled "Obama Onboard." One statement from Barrack is "conservation goals must be balanced by a strong respect for the ability of recreational anglers to practice their sport." Time will tell.

I've lived in the Keys for 4 years. A couple of months ago, I was chceking into joining the Republican Party in Monroe County (which incorporates the Keys). I intervied a lot of party people and acutal politicians from both parties. The overall picture I get is that in the Keys most people are independent, even if they belong to one party or the other. Most of us love Ron Saunders and Ileana Ross-Lehtinen, both influential politicans. Saunders is a Democrat, Ileana is a Republican. Again this is a generalization, but my little learning experience showed that most people down here vote for the person, not the party, and cross party lines all of the time.

I did pick up, though, that if you go by party registration, the norhern Keys (Key Largo) are more "Republican" than the southern Keys (Key West).

Rent a place for a month or two before you decide to relocate there. It's definitely a different lifestyle and most people either love it or hate it.

Prop Blast,

Ok so all of these appointments that he has announced will be changed after he is sworn in? Bush also signed into law that MPA's could not exclude recreational fisherman. We will see if that holds up.

PRESS RELEASE
Monterey Bay Aquarium Executive Director Applauds Selection of Jane Lubchenco to Head NOAA

Last update: 7:24 p.m. EST Dec. 18, 2008
MONTEREY, Calif., Dec 18, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Statement from Julie Packard, executive director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, on the announcement that President-elect Barack Obama will appoint Dr. Jane Lubchenco as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is the nation's principal ocean agency.
"I am absolutely delighted that Jane Lubchenco has been named NOAA Administrator by President-elect Obama. This is a great day for the future of the oceans.
I've long had an opportunity to work closely with Dr. Lubchenco. She is an extraordinary scientist who brings great creativity and innovation to addressing the grave threats facing our oceans today. She knows the magnitude of the threats and for decades has demonstrated national leadership in addressing these challenges.
Today, pollution, overfishing and global warming are taking a huge toll on marine life. It's happening along our coasts, and around the world. Without swift and effective action, we risk causing irreparable damage to ecosystems on which all life depends.
Jane Lubchenco has been an impressive advocate for ocean issues. I'm confident that, under her visionary leadership, NOAA will employ the best science on behalf of the oceans. All of us at the Monterey Bay Aquarium look forward to working with Dr. Lubchenco and the Obama administration to protect and restore the oceans."
Background: Julie Packard served on the Pew Oceans Commission, is vice-chair of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and was the 1998 recipient of the Audubon Medal for Conservation.
Dr. Lubchenco is past-president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Ecological Society of America; a MacArthur Fellow; recipient of the Heinz Environmental Medal; and served with Julie Packard on the Pew Oceans Commission, and the boards of trustees for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

And your point is?

Someone else endorsing someone on a nomination? Wow... How about this, I'll stay here in Florida and you stay where ever you are. Deal?

the monterey bay aqurarium and julie packard , are bad news for fishing and sportsman. Her group getting everything in california shut down with these MLPA"S , they have invested so much money and backing . and influencent people that the fishing is the blame for whats going on today. So beware of anyone that julie packard endorses.

it's a very diverse group in the keys, old time conchs, commercial fisherman, retired folks. Most are very welcoming. It's a huge mistake to lump the Keys with the rest of Florida, you are in the Islands (Conch Republic) and most people have an island attitude. Rent before you buy, it's not for everybody. Remember "a nice place to visit is not necessarily a nice place to live". Best of luck.
