Default key west express - fort myers beach to key west

Hey Fellas,

I remember reading in a previous post that someone had used a gps on the key west express to find route coordinates and speed info, so I just tried it on my own over the weekend.

This was my second ride from fort myers beach to key west express, this trip was aboard the atlanticat and the first was aboard the boat named "Key West Express". Click on the link below for info and photos of these two boats to see which is which.

Anyway the Key West Express was the first one I had been on and this boat is faster that the Atlanticat. Over this past weekend I had my gps and the atlanticat cruised 34.5 mph in fairly rough seas on friday going to kw, and then ran about 36 mph on the way back to ft myers on saturday eve in pretty calm maybe 1ft seas.

I was talking to several members of the crew and the key west express is newer and about 5-6 mph faster, but uses up more fuel so it runs when they need the capacity more in season.

This may help out some who were thinking of following one of the boats down and were worried about running 41 mph. Find out which boat is leaving and then you will know how fast you'll have to run to keep up.

Later,

Pump

Default Re: key west express - fort myers beach to key west

I just had a tanker come dockside to fuel me up. The guy says every night at midnight he goes to KWE and puts between 3,600 to 3,900 gallons of diesel in that cat. he said they get bulk commerical discounts but he said their price is around $3.00 per gallon.

so lets average 3,750 gallons per day x $3.00 per gallon thats $11,250 a day x 7 days a week = $78,750 x 52 weeks a year= $$$4,095,000

holy $hit thats alot of fuel- they need to be filling that boat with people to break even i would guess.

thanks for the info
