Gonna be difficult to find rooms without one of the "black" american express cards.
If you can get in Almond Inn, about a block off Duval, there's a Dennys on the Corner, and your still within walking/crawling distance of most anything. Rooms not large, but very up to date and clean. Small pool. Rental (elec) cars next door.
If you're hard up and want a blast from the past, El Patio Motel. Straight out of the 40's (maybe 30's), great architecture, green floor tile and all. Bathroom, shall we say small, but good if you're hung over. You can sit on the stool and get your head in the sink at the same time. And if you stretch out your legs, your feet can be in the shower too! It was clean and they even upgraded my room last time. It even had a 13in tv, though not in the bedroom! Nice courtyard and small pool. And if you don't beleive me about El Patio, go check it out!!!
I tryed to find a place to stay about 3 weeks ago and ended up at the Dolphin Marina on Little Torch Key. Truly nothing fancy, no phone, 175+ a night, but was quiet till some guys in a 48ft Viking pulled in all wearing rain suits. Needless to say it was windy out side!!!
