We all know the keys story. Great in the 70's. Expensive as hell now. Still nice to visit, but no one can afford that second home down there on the water. So the question is.....where are the '' NEW Florida Keys'' ? Another location on west coast Florida? Another state? Country?
Where is the tropical paradise still affordable and the tourists dont know about it yet.
There are no other places in the United States that you can drive to that have all that the Keys have to offer. Unfortunately, you have to leave the US.
The whole tourist thing here in Key West is a seasonal problem and is generally limited to specific areas of town. The biggest impact for locals is parking in old town and a modest increase in traffic on the major streets, but you can avoid some by using back roads. Another is restaurants fill up and it can be hard to get a table. Besides mini-lobster season, there is no noticable impact where I spend most of my time, on the water.
Up the Keys is another matter that I have no real knowledge of, I rarely make it past Stock Island.
Unfortunately I believe BUGBUSTER is right...Mexico, Belize, Dominican Rep....places like these still have a VERY affordable slice of paradise!.....but guaranteed not for long!....other than that, when CASTRO kicks it, there will be BEAUTIFUL ocean front property for sale 80 miles off key west....oh and all the vintage cars you can buy! lol

Right on My "Villa Margarita" is in the Dominican Republic - can't wait for Castro to kick the bucket forever
I'd say the next Keys is the Bahamas. Bimini is exploding and it is only 60 miles from Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. It is a shorter trip than going to the Keys and although the prices are exploding (Bimini Bay), it is still 1/3 the price of the Keys.

Socuban...nice pics! is that La Romana or Punta Cana? absolutely gorgeous. I've been to PC last year and loved it. I want to go to La Romana this year. If you have any tips for buying ocean front homes there email with the info! Thanks! .....Oh didnt notice you used to live here in NJ?, what part?
I'll stick with my place in the Keys, I pay an average of $69 for a flight out of AC in jersey, no customs and I can take the 7:15am plane and be in Key Largo by 11:30am for lunch. It's a great weekend getaway!
Check Again, I just went down for fantasy fest and we paid $64 a ticket, I also picked up tickets for january for $8.00 each way. They also just had a sale with $1.00 tickets, thats right $1.00, I missed them. You have to buy them right away when they go on sale to get them. I've taken 16 flights in the past 9 months and the highest I paid was $89, and the lowest was $8.00 for a ticket. I'm going again in december and we just paid $69 a ticket. Your missing out on some great deals from AC to Lauderdale on Spirit.
Victory,
I just checked their site, and they have $69 flights from AC to Lauderdale, sale ends tonight at 12:00am
Me, I'd just settle for the old Florida Keys, before the nice new roads, bridges, and waay too many people.... In the 35+ years I've lived in south florida the volume of good people bailing out and re-locating has been tremendous. Old time here is more than five years. The collective memory is not very good at all since there just aren't that many old timers still around.

It all goes in cycles, one day all those new roads and bridges will get old and there will be a whole new bunch of old timers down there. Hopefully in about 20 years I'll be one of them ( God Willing ).
