It is All-wheel drive, so it only locks in when you need it. It is an impressive system really. Much better than any other AWD system I've used in the past. It engages instantaneaously upon need when it senses wheel slippage.
Towing capacity when I bought it was listed at 10,000 lbs. I believed they've lowered it a little on newer models as well as horsepower.
Man, getting rid of all the toys!! First the boat, now the Denali?? Me thinks there is something up Tiger Rag's sleeve!!
JVLII
Naw, nothing up the sleeve. I usually get something different about every year or 2. I've had this one the longest of anything since I was in college. It has been an absolutely enjoyable vehicle. I'm looking diesel going forward. BTW, my brother has a 32 Regulator I can fish on anytime, so I didn't really need the Contender too terribly bad anymore.
Matt,
will you drop the price for me. You could have made it a package deal.
Actually Eric, the price goes up for you ! I think you owe me money from that deal you got on the Contender . Only kidding. I hope it treats you as well as it treated me......sniff, sniff !

Barry, what was it in 2001? I was thinking it was 03 when the rating changed.
I saw a review where the 6.0 vortec our performed the v-10 Ford towing 8000lbs in 0-60 runs and roll ons 40-60 mph. These were 3/4 ton pickups. So the 6.0 IMO is more than a capable towing motor.
The tow ratings seem to get more conservative (ie decrease) almost every year.
2001 Yukon XL Denali 1500 AWD with 6.0 V-8 had a rated tow limit of 8,400 lbs with the 3.73:1.
2002 Yukon XL Denali 1500 AWD with 6.0 V-8 had a rated tow limit of 8,000 lbs with the 3.73:1.
2003 Yukon XL Denali 1500 AWD with 6.0 V-8 had a rated tow limit of 7,800 lbs with the 3.73:1.
On my truck, the Yukon XL 2500 4WD with 6.0:
2000 8,100
2001 8,000
2002 7,500
2003 7,600
I think the hp for the 6.0 V-8 increased from 300 in 2000 to 320 in 2001, to 325 in 2004, to 335 in 2005.

I've got my 2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500 series catalog from my regular Yukon XL I had then. It had a tow rating of 8800 lbs according to the catalog. It does not include the Denali in this catalog, but my brother had an '01 and I'm pretty sure it was listed as having 10,000 lb towing capacity. I believe I found that figure again in an internet search the other day as well. What I can't find is the tow capacity on the 2002 Yukon XL Denali. I can't seem to find my catalog either. I think you are correct though Barry, they seem to have made the capacities more and more conservative every year. If I offered incorrect information, it was by mistake.
If you haven't ridden in a Denali, the ride isn't even comparible to the standard half ton. It is much, much better. The power is excellent and the towing ability is awesome.
