Do you still have the pair 20" Mercury 2008 300 xs for sale? If so, I would like to get some more information. What will be the best way to contact you or you can contact me at

I did some measuring and with the engine all the way down, I would still be 3.5" higher than I am now. I know those gearcases like to run higher but I am as high as I can go without blowing out constantly now spinning a Rev4. I really dont think I could go 3.5" higher. It would be an expensive experiment. The wife even gave the go-ahead but I just dont think it would work.

You have a 25" shaft on that boat now Demeanor, normally the rule of thumb is that a SportMaster is designed to run at a 5" elevated height (i.e. 30" transom run a 25", 25" transom, run a 20"). Where is your propshaft in relation to the bottom right now and what bolt hole are you in? Propshaft could easily be ran even with the bottom with a SportMaster. With the nose cone and short anti-vent plate, water flows easily up to the prop, where as a standard gearcase would allow water to flow more linear. A Bravo wouldn't hurt either, I bet with the increase in power and elevated drive height, you could swing a 22 Bravo no problem and have great all around performance, cruise in the 40s, WOT at 60...
I sold 3 this weekend and that left me with the 20" Left hand engine with 38 hours. Price for it is 10k.
I also have a friend that has 3-300 opti's for sale, 2-25" sporties, and 1 30" sporty. The guy who purchased my 300's is selling 3 2005 250 xs's with 600-700 hours as well (will be 2 25" and one 20" fleetmaster).
Call me if anyones interested and I will point you in their direction

Joey just hit the nail on the head with his explanation. When I repowered my 34 with twin 300 25" sporties I ended up 5 inches higher than where I was with the previous 30" 225's. The sporties are designed to run as surface drives with the propshaft even with the bottom of the hull. With set back you can go even higher from there.

Congrats on the sale. The timing wasnt right but thats ok. I could swear I had a 30" motor but maybe not. I spent the day walking around with my arm over my head to releive the tension on the nerve from my blown cervical disc. Buying a bigger motor although very tempting probably isnt what I should be worrying about. My boat may be parked for awhile if things dont improve. Going to have sit the Grove Slam out for sure
Joey, just for kicks, my engine was all the way down when I bought the boat. I kept raising it until it blew out at 3 holes up then came back down 1 hole. I am 2 holes up from being all the way down running a Rev4. At 3 holes it was iffy. I was trying to alieviate the porpoise at cruise but it really didnt help. I might have picked up a little performance.

Does your engine serial number say XL or XXL?

Looking to re-power my 98' Intrepid 289. I currentlly have 98's Merc. 250 EFI's and I love them, but they are old but dont have many hours (580 hrs) and are SUPER clean. Do you know the weight difference between the 250's and the 300's. Also I just upgraded the gauges to Livorsi II and controls. Will I be able to still keep my gauges and controls if re-power with 300's XS's? Can I use 87 or 89 octane on those motors? If you've sold the motors you had for sale, do you get others often?
Thanks.

I will sell them for 21k per pair, your pick
Typically, 25" sportmaster gearcases will fit transoms that require 25-30" shaft engines, and 20" Sportmaster gearcases will fit transoms that require 20-25" shaft engines.
The Sportmaster gear cases are the heavy duty ones. They have the same parts that go into a Bravo1 stern drive gearcase.
The price includes new trim pumps and hoses
The 300 opti's are the most fuel efficient engines on the market. I have owned 10 of them and they have been extremely reliable. I just purchased these 08's and I need to sell 4 of them. The 07's are on my boat and can be sea-trialed
