It's been a while since I've posted updates on our giant fishing activities up north as I was awaiting pictures. I've got them now and just wanted to let you know we had a pretty decent couple of weeks. I believe we fishing a total of 9 full days. During those days we put 700, 600, 400 & 350 pound giant tunas in the boat. We pulled the hook and/or broke off 3 more and released another dozen bluefin in the 68" to 71" range.

We have not fished in over a week as the fishing slowed down and we were waiting for another shot of fish from Canada. The boys are on their way back up now and will fish another day or two and if nothing happens they'll be making their way down to Morehead, NC for December and January.

Below are pictures of a couple fish - enjoy.

Canyon Runner Overnight Canyon Trips – “Buy-One Get One Giant Tuna Trip FREE!!!!”

Last year we offered up a FREE giant tuna trip in Morehead City, NC to anyone who booked us for the past year. 20 different groups took us up on this deal and some of them were treated to a couple giants. Well this year we want to make sure everyone is aware of the fact that if you book an overnighter canyon trip for the 2010 canyon season with the Canyon Runner Team between now and December 31, 2009 you will get a FREE giant tuna trip with us as well for no additional cost on the overnighter.

I also wanted to make everyone aware that we offer early season (June/July) Canyon Tutorial Charters. These one of a kind charters have you extremely involved in every single aspect of the trip. You work side-by-side and hand-in-hand with the Canyon Runner Crew - from the bridge, to the cockpit, to the engine room. We will go over every aspect of the trip and spend every minute together discussing techniques, lure placement, trolling patterns, knots, boat handling, reading radar, reading fish finders, reading the weather, and reading the water. Think of it as a 30+ hour seminar 100 miles offshore.

Our two-day overnighters are usually just 24-hour trips but on these tutorial overnighters we will be spending 30+ hours offshore. We will get you down to the boat 2 hours early and work with you to gear up for trolling, chunking, sharking, swordfishing and tilefishing and you will be doing all of this during your trip. We will get in 7-10 hours of trolling the first day and at night we’ll chunk for tuna and set up for swords and sharks. In the morning we will get up on the troll at first light and troll for another 7-10 hours. To spice up the day we may also spend some time dropping on the tilefish grounds. Again, you will be involved in every aspect of the trip.

Booking a tutorial trip insures that you will receive the most thorough hands-on training available anywhere at no additional cost to our normal trips. The cost for an overnighter is $3,995 on the 48’ Canyon Runner and $4,995 on the 60’ Ritchie Howell Canyon Runner and there is no additional cost for the tutorial trip (we will also throw in the FREE giant tuna trip if you book the tutorial trip before December 31, 2009).

If you would like to book one of these trips please give me a call at 732-272-4445 or email me at adam@canyonrunner.com.

Hope to hear from you soon!!!

Finally a fishing report I have been slack lately with my reports with everything going on around here like hunting season & getting ready for the Bluefins we have stayed on the go. . Trips have been few & far between but we have managed to fish the last few weekends. Brad my mate has been on vacation in North Dakota so I have had Capt. Jay Blount in the pit lately with the exception of last weekend when Jay blew his knee out so we made a swap & he ran the boat & I was in the pit. It has been a few years since I have had the chance to be there & I must say I enjoyed it. We had our first bite within 15 minutes of getting the spread out but it was not the bite I was expecting. The left flat came out of the clip & I picked him off pretty quick & we had our first Sail. We ended up the day with 3 Sailfish & a few Wahoo along with a few other species mixed in that is a catch I will take any day. Fishing has been good the last few weeks but then again it is November & it is supposed to be. The Kings have been very hungry just off the beach along with the Groupers which have been jumping on our deep baits. The bite should be good through November so give me a call & lets go do some catching. Just to let you know we are geared up & ready for the Bluefins we will be doing the same deal as last year $100.00 per man with a max of three. Give me a call for more info on these trips. My guess someone will catch one before Thanksgiving & then it should get in full swing until the end of January. We are fishing again this weekend so stay tuned for another report the first of the week.

We will once again be sending our new 60' Ritchie Howell Canyon Runner south for the winter. We are booking multiple day excursions for folks looking to live on our 60' Custom Yacht and have the boat move to wherever they wish to fish. Additionally, for folks looking to still get in on the great sail fishing and sword fishing right out of Miami, we are offering up the 60' Ritchie Howell as your fishing vessel and your home for your entire stay - of course you can also just go ahead and book a straight up charter depending on your desires.

We would like you to come on down and avoid spending money on hotel rooms and instead be our guests on our new yacht. Our 60' Ritchie Howell has 3 staterooms and 2 full heads. Along with a huge saloon, gallon and dinette area there is plenty of room for your crew to live in luxury for as long as you wish. The cost of these trips are $2,000 a day plus fuel for trips booked for Friday-Sunday and only $1,500 plus fuel for trips booked for Monday-Thursday. We will also assist in providing all your food and drink catering needs!!! These trips were a huge hit last year and we are already 50% booked up for February and March.

For that price you get the boat from as soon as you land until you head home. We will take her where ever you wish - Bahamas (Blue Marlin/Wahoo/Sailfish/Bottom Fish), Key West (Sailfish/Bottom Fish) or just stay right in South Beach Miami. Considering that hotel rooms cost $500+ per room this package will help you save considerably off the costs of fishing with us and give you the flexibility to go where ever you want us to take you.

In addition to a shot at the high flying Sailfish in the "Sailfish Capital of the World", a trip out of Miami at night will put you into one of the hottest Swordfish bites on earth. There are few things more enjoyable then drifting the Gulf Stream in 70-80 degree weather with Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Palm Beach providing the background lighting, putting a few Swords in the boat, and being back at the dock in time for last call.

At only $1,495 per trip, you could do 3 Sailfish trips for less than the price of one overnighter and the same for a sword trip at $1,895. You can also book 18 hour sailfish and swordfish combo trips for $2695. Finally, and what was a huge hit last year, is living and fishing on the boat for $2,000 a day plus fuel for trips booked for Friday-Sunday and only $1,500 plus fuel for trips booked for Monday-Thursday (Please note we burn as little as 100 gallons per trip).

To book a date please give us a call at 732-272-4445 or email me at adam@canyonrunner.com.

This past week I divided my time fishing a night charter early in the week, then a daytime trip out of Flamingo. The night trip was on a short tide, with the low slack tide only three hours after our start. We found modest numbers of small tarpon at bridges and docklights, jumping six fish on flies and lures, with two of them all the way to the boat.. Here's a photo of T.J. Schulz with his first tarpon on fly, hooked up and running...
[img][img]

Both of the ones we hooked on fly made it to the skiff, the ones on light spinning gear just took my anglers to school... I think they'll be back.

A few days later we did a special trip back down to Flamingo. My angler that day was my wife... Her first trip there was over 30 years ago and we've been together since then. Our schedules usually run in different directions so we rarely fish together in recent years. She hasn't lost her touch...

Our target this day was fish for the table and it was a good trip. Her first snook of the day was right at 9lbs. Here's a photo...
[img][img]

We went on to catch lots of speckled trout along the coast and hook one or two "un-stoppables" along the way. The trout were concentrated in river mouths, bright silver- just in from the Gulf, and very hungry. At one spot there were so many that it was a fish every cast. We left them biting.

We found lots and lots of bait everywhere, whitebait, small herring, large bay anchovies, and schools of mullet. Wherever the mullet were there were large tarpon... as a matter of fact there were numbers of big tarpon almost everywhere we went. They should be around at least another week until we finally get a cold enough night to push them back out into the Gulf.

We ended the day with a nice 20" red - just right for the table.
[img][img]

It was nice to be the angler for a change.... One other small item - for anyone that fishes with their wives or girlfriends... Although Everglades National Park is a wilderness and many days we're miles and miles from the boat ramp - we're never very far from a pit stop for the ladies. All the backcountry camping spots have Porta-Potties....

It's been a long while, darned nearly six weeks, since my last report but the fish have been biting... By the first week of October we were still in...

It's been a long while, darned nearly six weeks, since my last report but the fish have been biting... By the first week of October we were still in summer mode, very hot days with some rain every afternoon and it was that way the first three weeks of this month. All of that came to an end last weekend when we finally got our first cold front along with the winds and just plain bad weather. By Wednesday the water temps at dawn had dropped ten degrees, showing just under 70 at the ramp. The water temps ranged from as low as 67 all the way up to 71 degrees during the day so we're finally into a solid fall transition in my areas.

Bait along the Gulf coast of the 'Glades has been really thick now for some weeks - mostly small threadfins, medium pilchards (scaled sardines, actually), and finger mullet. The bait gets worked over top to bottom from first light now and are marked by birds and the topwater action provided by everything from spanish mackeral on down. With the bait generally holding within a short distance to mangrove shorelines a guide's job can be as simple as netting the bait, then moving to the nearest downed trees along any outside shoreline where slot and over-slot reds, small to medium snook, little tarpon and everything else attacks your offering on sight. The recent cold snap chased away all the big tarpon but my guess is that they'll show up again (might be there now...) since we're not forecasted for another cold front in the next week or so. Whenever the action along the coast slows down it's a simple matter of working up into the many rivers that drain into the Gulf to find strong action from grouper and snapper.. This is still my favorite time of the year.
Although the bait makes live baiting an easy choice the fish are still responding well to lures and flies. A new fly that I've been impressed with is the Olson's Slider by Dave Olson, who happens to be the guy that runs the Fly Shop of Miami. I was lucky enough to have him on my skiff one day... It works exactly the way a finger mullet moves.... and it's weedless. As far as lures it's been Gulp tails on my own 1/8 or 1/4oz jigheads, soft plastics, and spoons. A little live chumming helps get everything started. The fish up in Whitewater Bay are starting to be more active as well. In a few weeks that's where most of the action will be as fish begin their slow migration back inside pushed by falling water temps.

Since there's very few visitors down here now and that situation will only change as we get into the tourist season in December, most days I hardly see another boat on the water. Backcountry heaven!

Here's a few photos of what we've been doing...
[img][img]

Captain Mark DeCabia and Phil Dulanie took the Kurt Panzer charter out on Thursday for the first of a few day chunking trips to the canyon. I say the first of a few as the trip was quite successful as the yellowfin seem to be biting during the day now on the chunk. They left Manasquan Inlet late as the charter was flying in and did not break the inlet until 3:30am. They arrived on the west wall of the Hudson Canyon at 7:30am and dropped the hook. They immediately had a bite and went 1 for 3 in the first couple hours. The tuna started to school under the boat around 150-200 feet but did not start feeding until around 10am when they started a steady pick.

By 1:30pm they had 10 yellowfin on 1 longfin in the boat. The yellowfin were all right around 30 pounds the longfin a little nicer. They added another yellowfin just before coming home fishing off the trip with 12 tuna in the box. Most of the fish were caught jigging down deep around 200 feet but some were also caught on bait.

Based on this performance it looks like we got another 2 weeks of fishing but of course based on the usual weather for this time of year if we get out twice a week we would be thrilled.

Capts. Mark DeBlasio and Pete Doran have switched over to giant tuna fishing for the fall/winter season on the 48 Canyon Runner. They moved the Canyon Runner up to Chatham on Monday afternoon and Tuesday was their first full day of fishing. They didn't catch anything on Tuesday, a 71 inch short on Wednesday afternoon (released) and a 70 inch short in the middle of the night at 3am (released).

Drift fishing they reset this morning just before slack tide and the fish bait in the water - a herring - was engulfed by the right one this time just seconds after walking away from the rod. This one took one hour to fight and we were lucky enough to put it in the boat. It is around 650 pounds.

I'll have pictures later in the week.
