Looking for advice on finding work from North Carolina to Florida for the month of January. Experienced fisherman from New England (primarily Striped Bass and Tuna) that just wants to fish. I don’t care if the pay is lousy as long as I’m on the water. Would like to work on a larger sportfish or commercial Tuna boat. I understand that finding work for a month may be difficult but figured it was worth a shot. Thanks for any and all help in advance.

Guys BIG NEWS! Please take a look at the following, this is from the Florida Sportsman forum, NE General section. If you have a minute, I have copied the link in to the actual page. Member name Wattever (Earl Kerr) has been doing one hell of a job in fighting the SAFMC and has just supplied us with great information. I think we should thank him on the effort he is providing as well. He has been in constant contact with the city of Jacksonville and the Mayor's office and had a member of the Mayor's office attend last weeks SAFMC public hearing. The city councilman have just sent him a document they put together, as follows:

Attached is a resolution I have introduced for consideration by the entire City Council. The resolution should appear (as a new introduction) on the City Council agenda at Tuesday night’s meeting. I expect to have a bill number assigned to the resolution sometime tomorrow, and will forward you the number as soon as I receive it.
Unfortunately, the normal legislative process will not bring the resolution to a vote (by the full City Council) until December 8, 2009. However, as I understand it, voting on December 8th would be well after the public comment period had ended for proposed South Atlantic Fishery Management Council amendments 17A, 17B and 18. With that said, the only way to have the resolution become part of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council public comment record would be for the City Council to consider it as an emergency Tuesday night. While certainly possible, consideration as an emergency would be greatly enhanced if you (and others interested in this issue) did the following;

· Contact other City Council members urging them to sponsor, support and/or consider the resolution as an emergency. (When contacting City Council members, the bill number will make it easier for you to reference the resolution.)
· Attend Tuesday’s City Council meeting to address the City Council during the public comment period (around 6:00 PM) urging City Council members to sponsor, support and/or consider the resolution as an emergency.

It is also my understanding that Mayor Peyton intends to send a letter to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council with language similar to that found in Section 1 of my resolution.
Again, I’ll provide you with a bill number as soon as I have the same. If you should have any questions, please contact me accordingly.

Hello, I am new to the fishing scene in Stuart Fl and was wondering if anyone could help to put me on the fish. I will be docked right by St Lucie inlet in the marriot marina, and will be fishing on a friends new boat. I will be in Stuart from 12-10-2009 to 12-17-2009.

Problem is I have never really fished this area and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I wouldn't really even know where to start. I would probably try to get some live bait in the well, and try a few different spots. Maybe hit some reefs/bottom structure, then maybe push offshore a bit more to look for something a bit bigger. Would I have luck if I ran kite rods with live bait for sails? Should I sit over a reef and chum while sending some live baits out into the slick while sending bait chunks freelined down into the slick? Any idea how deep or where would be a good place to start?

I would even consider hiring a captain for the first day just to show us the lay of the land. Anyone have any good local charter capts?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kayak fishing (or “Yak” to aficionados) has been around for some time now, developing into a primarily coastal sport since the mid 1980’s. It offers solitude and proximity to the fishing – but primarily stealth and the ability to fish in extremely skinny water.
Some adventurous souls however continue to push the envelope – we have even experienced anglers in Guatemala launching their Yak from a mother ship 40 miles out to chase sailfish. One of the first and best known pioneers of “extreme kayaking” is Florida resident Kayak Willie who became a legend, catching sailfish in the Florida Keys at will from his fifty-pound kayak. Using live ballyhoo as bait, he hooked sailfish in as little as forty-five feet of water. One towed him twelve miles before breaking off. Sharks were an occasional hazard, as were skittering sailfish that nearly speared him while he floated inches above the waterline. Even catching bait could be dangerous. Leaning over to unhook a blue runner, Willie was about to grab his bait when a barracuda lunged and cut the fish in half. Asked what his highest priority tip was for this kind of fishing – he replied “Velcro”…………a wonderful invention that enables the kayak fisherman to physically attach gear to the hull. Of course some might argue that this should always take second place to paddle clips; you can always chase the bait bucket that may have fallen over, but try chasing your paddle in a 2 know current using the palms of your hand !
No kayak fishing to report in Guatemala this past week, but we did experience a brief burst of extreme fishing. Once the front had moved through (the effects of IDA), the blue water settled down and the fish were biting aggressively. For a couple of days building up to the new moon we were raising over 40 sailfish per day, but things have now cooled off somewhat, raising 15-20 fish per boat. There has been green water to the South, with our boats having to travel over 40 miles to find good blue water and consistent raises, although the numbers have reduced to the high single digits for raises.
The winter almanac is forecasting the coldest winter in North America in a decade – so this is a great year to book in for a fishing trip to the calm waters and sunshine of Guatemala while we still have dates available ! Get our FREE Angling Guide to Guatemala

I stopped by one of their stores in Greensboro, NC yesterday evening on the way back from a meeting. I was impressed with the size of the store and the selection, but not too much with the fishing equipment (reels in particular) and the prices. Even the stuff that was "on sale" seemed kind of high. I'm just curious what other folks think about these stores.

I am leaving Virginia to the Punta Guiones / Garza area thnksgiving morning for 10 days.... I want to fish a couple - 3 days down there with my girlfriend and 10 y/o daughter. The capt down there runs a 20' 27' and 32' boat. Just wandering what to expect the fishing and weather to be like... Since its just 3 of us I am thinking of the 27'er for 1/2 days... here is the web site of the fish outfit down there. My girlfriend has been fishing with them a couple time and did real well just different times of year.

I am looking to buy 4 matching rods and reels for offshore use. I want to purchase something in the $150-$200 range for each combo. $200 is my max budget per combo. I am not a die-hard fisherman but want something that will last for quite a while. I am not totally new to fishing but I am new to fishing gear ownership. I have allways gone with friends and family and used their equipment. They will be used for troling and bottom fishing off of Fort Pierce. I have only looked online and have not looked at any local tackle shops. My only requirements are the poles have to have gimbals on the bottom for the rodholders. Any suggestions would be much appreciatted! Here are a few links to combos I have been looking at.
Thanks,
