My office is at the front of our headquarters building. We have three four story high flagpoles. One with Old Glory, one with the state flag and one with the company flag.

So this afternoon they go out to change over The Stars and Stripes as it was a bit faded. They start to wind down the national flag but stop after a few seconds, then raise it again. Then they go over and lower the state and company flags to just above the ground, then go back and lower Old Glory, replace the flag, raise it, and then they went over and raised the other two flags.

I'm thinking they started to lower the national flag, realized that for the time they had it lowered to replace there would be flags flying higher than it against etiquette, so stopped and did what they did.

I tried to find it under flag etiquette, but couldn't. I suspect you do not have to lower the other flags when simply replacing the national flag as it is not actually "flying" when being lowered for the short period to replace.

If you think of an array of dozens of flags outside many sporting events or buildings, is it expected to lower all of them if you are taking our national flag down to quickly replace it?

Anyone know?

We are converting our screened porch to a sunroom. We currently have Anderson (400 series I think .... whatever is their top-of-the-line) and have been happy with them but they are expensive.

The contractor said to consider MW windows since they are considerably cheaper and the quality is high. Any contractors ---- what are your thoughts? If you don't like MW, what do you recommend?

We need (4) triple 2452, and a single quad 2452 plus a 6ft sliding door.

AP

LOS ANGELES -- The daughter of Sen. John Kerry was arrested Thursday in Hollywood for allegedly driving drunk.
Alexandra Kerry, 36, was stopped by officers at about 12:40 a.m. and booked at the Hollywood police station for investigation of driving under the influence, Officer April Harding said.
She was held for about five hours and released at about 5:30 a.m. after posting $5,000 bail, Harding said. She had no other details.
Jodi Seth, John Kerry's spokeswoman, said the senator's daughter was pulled over for an expired registration and was released after a breathalyzer test showed her blood-alcohol level was under the legal limit.
"Sen. Kerry supports his daughter and will have no further comment on a private matter," Seth said in a statement.
Harding said she did not know whether Alexandra Kerry had tested for a blood-alcohol level above the legal driving limit of .08.
However, a driver with a lower blood-alcohol level still can be arrested on suspicion of DUI if they were driving recklessly or officers considered them to be a danger, Harding said.
Alexandra Kerry is the eldest daughter of the Massachusetts senator, the Democrats' 2004 presidential nominee.
She has produced documentaries and has had several small acting roles.

Watch this movie just about everytime it is on tv and really like it.

I was thinking back I can barely recall when it happened, I was in elementary school, but it amazes me and how the guys at Mission Control in Houston got those pilots back alive. In this world of technonolgy it amazes me to watch them pull out their slide rules and do their calculations.

These guys are real American Heros:thumbsup:

I saw a show on the biography channel a while back and it had the real Gene Krantz(played by Ed Harris) and it amazed me at how well Harris portrayed him.

Couple of my favorite quotes from the movie are "Failure is not an option" and "I beg your pardon sir but I believe this could be our finest hour"

Anyone here a little older than I that remembers this event

New Orleans-Area Residents 'Vindicated' by Katrina Ruling Against Army Corps of Engineers

Thursday, November 19, 2009

New Orleans-area residents have been "vindicated" after a historic ruling that found the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers negligent in failing to prevent devastating Hurricane Katrina flooding, an attorney in the case said Thursday.

A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the corps' failure to properly maintain a navigation channel led to massive floods when Katrina hit in August 2005.
Lawyer Joe Bruno, who represented plaintiffs in the case against the Corps of Engineers, praised the decision at a news conference Thursday. He said those affected by the monster storm — which at its peak was a Category 5 hurricane — have been "vindicated."

"We're seeking compensation," Bruno said. (there's a shocker!)

Lawyers said residents are finally seeing justice served and vowed that the decision will stand.
Those whose lives were turned upside down after Katrina struck on Aug. 29, 2005, said it's important to hold the corps responsible for its part in the catastrophe.
"It's just about holding the corps accountable for what they did," one woman who lived through the hurricane said at the news conference. "They knew there were problems. I think the Corps of Engineers failed us."

"There's things we all lost. I lost things that are unreplaceable," she said through tears. "It was a long and hard road."
U.S. District Judge Stanwood Duval sided with five residents and one business who argued the Army Corps' shoddy oversight of the Mississippi Outlet led to the flooding of New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward and neighboring St. Bernard Parish.

He said, however, that the corps couldn't be held liable for the flooding of eastern New Orleans, where one of the plaintiffs lived.

"The failure of the Corps to recognize the destruction that the MRGO had caused and the potential hazard that it created is clearly negligent on the part of the Corps," Duval said in his ruling.
"Furthermore, the corps not only knew, but admitted by 1988, that the MRGO threatened human life and yet it did not act in time to prevent the catastrophic disaster that ensued with the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina."

'Monumental Negligence'

Duval awarded the plaintiffs $720,000, or about $170,000 each, but the decision could eventually make the government vulnerable to a much larger payout.
The ruling should give more than 100,000 other people, businesses and government entities a better shot at claiming billions of dollars in damages.
Bruno said the ruling underscored the Army Corps' long history of failure to properly protect the New Orleans region.
"It's high time we look at the way these guys do business and do a full re-evaluation of the way it does business," Bruno said Wednesday.

RE: Gala Christmas Party
I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place on December 23rd, starting at noon in the private function room at the Grill House. There will be a cash bar and plenty of drinks!
We'll have a small band playing traditional carols... feel free to sing along. And don't be surprised if our CEO shows up dressed as Santa
Claus! A Christmas tree will be lit at 1:00 PM. Exchanges of gifts
among employees can be done at that time; however, no gift should be over $10.00 to make the giving of gifts easy for everyone's pockets.
This gathering is only for employees!
Our CEO will make a special announcement at that time!
Merry Christmas to you and your family,
Patty
RE: Gala Holiday Party
In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees.
We recognize that Hanukkah is an important holiday, which often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year. However, from now on, we're calling it our "Holiday Party." The same policy applies to any other employees who are not Christians and to those still celebrating Reconciliation Day. There will be no Christmas tree and no Christmas carols will be sung. We will have other types of music for your enjoyment.
Happy now?
Happy Holidays to you and your family,
Patty
RE: Holiday Party
Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking table, you didn't sign your name. I'm happy to accommodate this request, but if I put a sign on a table that reads, "AA Only", you wouldn't be anonymous anymore. How am I supposed to handle this?
Somebody?
And sorry, but forget about the gift exchange, no gifts are allowed since the union members feel that $10.00 is too much money and the executives believe $10.00 is a little chintzy.
REMEMBER: NO GIFTS EXCHANGE WILL BE ALLOWED.
RE: Generic Holiday Party
What a diverse group we are! I had no idea that December 20th begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during daylight hours. There goes the party! Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our Muslim employees' beliefs. Perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party or else package everything for you to take it home in little foil doggy baggy. Will that work?
Meanwhile, I've arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet, and pregnant women will get the table closest to the restrooms.
Gays are allowed to sit with each other. Lesbians do not have to sit with Gay men, each group will have their own table. Yes, there will be flower arrangement for the Gay men's table.
To the person asking permission to cross dress, the Grill House asks that no cross-dressing be allowed, apparently because of concerns about confusion in the restrooms. Sorry.
We will have booster seats for short people.
Low-fat food will be available for those on a diet.
I am sorry to report that we cannot control the amount of salt used in the food . The Grill House suggests that people with high blood pressure taste a bite first.
There will be fresh "low sugar" fruits as dessert for diabetics, but the restaurant cannot supply "no sugar" desserts. Sorry!
Did I miss anything?!?!?
RE: The F*%^ing Holiday Party
I've had it with you vegetarian pricks!!! We're going to keep this
party at the Grill House whether you like it or not, so you can sit quietly at the table furthest from the "grill of death," as you so quaintly put it, and you'll get your f*%^ing salad bar, including organic tomatoes. But you know, tomatoes have feelings, too. They scream when you slice them. I've heard them scream. I'm hearing them scream right NOW!
The rest of you f*%^ing wierdos can kiss my *ss. I hope you all have a rotten holiday!
Drive drunk and die,
The B*tch from H*ll!!!
RE: Patty Lewis and Holiday Party
I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing Patty Lewis a speedy recovery and I'll continue to forward your cards to her.
In the meantime, management has decided to cancel our Holiday Party and give everyone the afternoon of the 23rd off with full pay.
Happy Holidays!
Luckily, they have an in-home repair service company... in Atlanta, GA!

Seriously, I went to turn it on this morning, and it just sat and looked at me. The Sony logo lights up, the green power light comes on, but nothing comes on the screen. I tried playing the DVD through it, and that didn't work either. Anybody have or hear of this same problem?

Having a contractor or 2 come over and give an estimated price for a 6ft, 2 course (step) brick-faced step leading up to a porch. What would you think would be a respectable (good) price for this work?

FYI - The sidewalk is already in place so the contractor only has to lay block on an existing base.
