Do the pads just sit by themselves? Are there straps to keep them in place?

The straps are really there to serve as a hinge more than an anchor point. However many people use them as an attachment point. The purpose of the Post pad design is to simply offer an inexpensive but stylish solution for additional padding. Over the years I have seen many things used as booster seats or lumbar support, "butt pillows", gear bags, inflatable bouys, fenders, etc.
