Default Massive, massive amounts of SPAM

Cleaned up my inbox last evening around 10:30pm and shut down. Got online this morning around 11:00am. and I had 137 emails and only 2 were not spam. Too many to block each sender so I just dumped them all at once. Since then I have blocked over 30 more senders and they just keep coming. Hang on, gotta go block aother one. Was wrong, 5 came in. This sucks big time. Anyone else having this problem and could it be related to a new member or guest? Yesterday I was here and two other websites I have been visiting for years with no problems.

I have noticed the same problem lately.......within the last week............

I've been trying to locate the source of the problem and sad to say, this forum is the only thing that I have joined lately. I'm NOT saying that this forum is the root of the problem, but the problem deffinately exploded since I registered here.

The real question is how do I make it stop?

There is no point in blocking the senders. Spammers forge a new address each time.

Do you have any spam blocking software in place? Trend Internet Security 2006 includes one.

It's getting worse and worse.........what ever you do, don't ever try and delete yourself from a specific list.

This only confirms that it is a valid e-mail address.

Contact your ISP and see what they offer for spam. I did this yesterday, I did not realize my hosting service had implemented some new stuff. I used to get 40 to 60 per day and I have only received 1 today.

I switched to gmail on Aug 9 and have received zero, nada, zip, zilch in spam since then. It has a lot of other cool features, too! For example, I have four email addresses for my different USCGAux offices. I can forward that mail to my gmail account (that, of course, is a feature of the Aux mail system, not of gmail) BUT here's the cool part: I can SEND email from my gmail account using the Aux email addresses. So I don't have to go through the clunky process of opening the Aux mail system to send out my "official" stuff. Lots of other nifty features, too.

Very, very cool.

Sorry Sheila.... I created a 'parkersal@gmail.com" address. Besides google using scanning software in your emails to target ads to you, I started receiving spam. If I conversed via gmail with a dave destapolous, for mythical example, I would get spam from steve, joe, nick destapolos...etc. If I conversed about a BINGHAMTON alumni issue, I received smap from such and such at binghamton.com.

The only thing that works is spam blocker software, and not visiting poker or girly sites.

That's interesting, and unfortunate, Sal. I'll let you know if that changes. As for the scanning thing, my policy has always been to not write anything in emal that I wouldn't want to see on a billboard alongside the freeway. So I don't worry too much about it.

I just peeked in my spam folder. It's empty.

How long ago was it? I wonder if they've changed their system.

I get about 100 spams a day. I am running Symantic Internet Security and Eudora, both of which put spam in a separate folder, but the software is erratic -- a bit of spam gets into the Inbox, and now and then a good message winds up in the Spam box, so I have to be careful what I delete.

I understand that about 80% of Internet traffic is spam. Most of what I get is the same old crapola: drugs, loan approvals for .5% interest on a gazillion dollar mortgage, money laundering commissions from a dead man's lawyer in Zimbabwe, and so forth.

I swithed when broad band came available to me and I have earthlink and I set the filter for e-mail on high and it filters everything but the addresses in my online address book. Only took a month or so to get all the addresss I wanted in, and new ones I want, or expect, such as new products I have bought updates etc. I usually go to my web mail every other day or so and check for new addresses in the spam folder and then turn the unwanted in as spam from the menu screen. I takes just a minute or so now, my wife who did not do this still gets rediculus amounts of spam and is now doing this.

I think hotspot has it.

I used to get some from comcast mail with my old computer (5 a day) but with my new one with xp I have only gotten maybe 4 this past month

On the downside - comcast cable internet service is $50 per month.

Our company has been getting hit pretty hard the last week. I used to only get 1-2 day, now 40+ since last week.

Just this morning I was invited to "shoot like a rock star". Didn't know rock stars were into hunting....

Question for you computer people - Our server goes through ATT, and most get slassified as spam based on the bayesian probability and put in a zip file and sent on to me. Is this still safe? I never open them.

The other thing I'm worried about - just happened wwhile reading this thread - one come through (not classified as spam by the server) and my little email notice box pops up. This one had a name of someone that works for me (oddly I had just called her 5 minutes before), so I clicked to open and then realized it was a spam.

Did I sent out a "hidden" reply of something to the evil doers of the internet world?

I have been told that if you imbed your e-mail adress into a website, they have tools that crawl website and find the e-mail address. mabe Wiley can shed some light on this.

Try not to display your email address in public. That includes newsgroup postings, chat rooms, web sites or in an online service's membership directories; spammers may use them to harvest addresses.
Check the privacy policy when you submit your address to a web site. See if it allows the company to sell your address. You can choose to opt-out of this provision, or refuse to submit your address to web sites that will not protect it.
Read and understand the entire form before you transmit personal information through a web site. Some web sites allow you to opt out of receiving email from their "partners" - read the directions carefully if you want to opt out.
Consider establishing two email addresses - one for personal messages and one for newsgroups and chat rooms. You also might use a disposable email address service that would create a separate email address that forwards to your permanent account. If one of the disposable addresses begins to receive spam, you can shut it off without affecting your permanent address.
Use a unique email address. Your choice of email addresses may affect the amount of spam you receive. Spammers use "dictionary attacks" to sort through possible name combinations at large ISPs or email services, hoping to find a valid address. Thus, a common name such as "jdoe" may get more spam than a more unique name like "jd51x02oe." Of course, there is a downside - it is harder to remember an unusual email address.
Use an email filter. Check your email account to see if it provides a tool to filter out potential spam or a way to channel spam into a bulk email folder. You might want to consider these options when you are choosing which Internet Service Provider (ISP) to use.

Just a thought...

Gon into your THT "Control Panel" and make your e-mail address non-public. Do the equivalent in any forum you join. Our members can P/M you if they want to say something discretely.
