Maybe y'all remember a thread I posted concerning DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis...Blood Clots), if not I'll remind you. DVT affects 2 million people per year and kills 200,000 annually. Anyone who travels alot (planes, trains, or automobiles) or just sits at a desk for extended periods can be at risk. Don't let it happen to you. Blood thinner therapy sucks royally. Heparin is an injectable thinner that is injected into the fatty tissue around one's gut. After a month, your gut will be black and blue and hurt like hell. Warfarin is an oral thinner that is taken in extremely small doses because it IS rat poison. It took me 7 months to get over my clot. Guess what...no drinking, no workouts, no activity that could lead to bleeding, or any other activity commonly associated with having a life. If you sit a lot and have a pain behind your knee which spreads to your calf (my clot felt like a muscle pull) seek a doctor immediately. He/She will perform an ultrasound to determine what ails you.
Farmerjane sent me a PM asking about my leg. She is truly a great person and without THT I would never have met such a person. Truthfully THT has allowed me to meet hundreds of outstanding people and hopefully with THT I can maybe help save someone's life. Thanks to Wiley as well.

Ryan: I read the thread and thought, before looking at your name you were a one of my customers in TN. The exact same thing happened to him and he nearly died! He explained to me a contributing factor for him was vegetables believe it or not. He's just a good old country boy you know with a garden house in the hills great guy but he told me he loves veggies, well he ate lots of cucumbers and some vitamin was contributing to the thickening of his blood and he then went on to tell me facts which were scary, there are probably people who will read this who have this condition and know many others who are unaware of their ailment.
Thanks For keeping us AWAKE
Vitamin K is the culprit, it's found in Broccoli/Cauliflower, Lettuce, Spinach, Collared Greens, etc. It's a good vitamin...we need it but as with anything too much can be a bad thing. Oranges are good for you but if you eat 70 per day they can be bad.
Reelboobs,
Yep, the old Robalo is a perfect, seaworthy, gas sipping, offshore fishing machine. The Johnny 175 pushes it at a WOT speed of 48 MPH measured on a GPS with WAAS. We limited on Kings, caught a few spanny macks, and had a ball with spadefish on light tackle out near the triple nickel rig off Port O'Connor.
Originalsin,
Veracose veins are at or near the surface. DVT is deep in the leg muscle. My pain came from the blood's inability to flow freely back to the lungs due to the clot. It was backing up and causing inflammation. Had the clot dislodged when I was sleeping, I would have died of a pulmonary embolism and I'd be taking a long dirt nap.

Did your doctor say anything about whether taking a "baby" (dow dose 81 mg) aspirin daily helps avoid the problem? Seems like cardios are recommending the low dose aspirin (daily) to all their patients. I wonder if it would also help with avoiding the type of problem you experienced.

yes my doc did say aspirin can help prevent a relapse. Low dose aspirin are better for people who have severe stomach reactions to regular dose aspirin. I take full dose b/c it covers such a large gamut of ailments and it prevents me from keeping two separate bottles of aspirin. Before taking a long trip, take an aspirin...it can't hurt.

Thanks Ryan for the information AND the compliment ~ SO NICE!!
I swear on our long trip to Florida my left leg started to ache and I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT - "OMG - I'm gettin' a blood clot just like Haifischjager!!"
You can be SURE that I will start takin' a dose of aspirin on any future long vehicle drives!
And all of us here at THT really do appreciate all of your contributions to this forum ~ both fishin' AND otherwise. I LIKE to be kept informed on different topics and this place has DEFINITELY done that!
Thanks for sharing the information about DVT. You could very well save a life by passing that information on. And more importantly, best of luck to you as you continue your recovery.
Not to hijack your thread, but I'd like to share an easy way for lay persons to evaluate whether someone is having a CVA (stroke). New medications can make a huge difference in the outcome following a stroke, but prompt treatment is the key. This simple little test, easily administered by any lay person with two brain cells to rub together, can assist in determining whether the person is having a CVA and getting that critical, perhaps life-saving, treatment.
First, ask the person to smile. Now look. Is the smile symmetrical on both sides of the face? Or does it droop on one side? If it droops, suspect a stroke and call 911.
Second, ask the person to raise the arms up over the head, like if you were simulating a soccer goal, or attending a prayer meeting. Do both arms reach the same height? If not, suspect a stroke and call 911.
Third, ask the person to speak a simple sentence. It could be as easy as, "what did you have for breakfast today, Hank?" or, "Tell me the color of my shirt, pants, and shoes, Sally." If the response is slurred, delayed, or difficult to understand, then suspect a stroke and call 911.
Prompt treatment is the key to good recovery from a stroke.
I'm walking proof.

Hey, no problem with bringing up another important life saving tip. Maybe Wiley could start another catagory for medical tips from persons who experienced actual medical emergencies. Since we have a Pro Bono marine lawyer maybe we can have a doctor to give advice as well. There would have to be a disclaimer though.
DISCLAIMER: If you have allergies to aspirin, consult your doctor on what you should take in its absence.
