Default Are sports fixed?

I wouldn't doubt for a minute that at least
some part of pro (NCAA?) sports of all kinds
are "tainted".
Or am I just being too much of of a pessimist?

Ain't no way that those folks can get that organized!! Too many folks watching and the legal gambling in Nevada is dependant on a straight game.
What are the chances that a kid in college could keep his mouth shut if someone paid him to throw a game?
I'm not saying they don'e ever try to fix them, just don't think it is successful a significan amount of times.

The only example that I saw 1st hand was with the old USFL. Knowing the co-owner of the Boston Breakers I had access to all their games and locker rooms. Waiting in a hallway before a game with Chicago, I overheard someone on the phone placing a 5k bet on Boston. As I looked around the corner the Chicago place kicker was making the bet! Boston won the game by three if I remember right!

With what I've seen in football and hockey, you don't need to address the players, target the refs.........there are fewer of them and they hang around a lot longer.

My money is on there is fixed games.

I don't know about being fixed per se, but I am sure that in at least one sport there is all sorts of collusion going on. Not sure if its illegal but I know that there are at least some folks in this country who support this collusion.

I mean think about it, we get the most expensive lures, the freshest bait, the fastest boats and the fish still don't bite. My guess is that the fish are all part of a large union and together they have decided not to come to dinner. There oughta be a law!

REFS. This weekend NCAA tourney.
Arizona coach Lute Olson had a timeout called for him by the refs. Villanova coach Jay Wright running along the sidelines right next to the ref, screaming in the refs ears couldn't get one called. Later Mustafa Shakur Arizona player calls timeout, with none remaining, isn't acknowledged by ref standing next to him. No Time out, no technical foul. All circumstances in critical points of game. Stuff happens all the time with the refs influencing the outcome of games.

Yeah, just ask the Seahawks about refs influencing the outcome of a game.

And since the last post mentioned Arizona in the tourney, last year against Illinois in the round of eight, playing in Chicago, AZ up by 15 in the second half, the refs decided to "let em play".

Default RE: Are sports fixed?

this is the main reason why i love College sports....the F'en players play for whats on the front of the jersey...not what's on the back of the jersey.... although schools gain revenue from national exposure....if there is any hint of foul play.....the NCAA jump on it quick and the school is punished from this....

but there is one thing to consider...Roy Williams said about the incident at Kansas, "if they actually payed attention to what really goes on in recruiting...there would be monsterous consequences" So ya never know with sports....It's ALL about the money, but I like to think that it's not the case with Collegiate Athletics....I mean honestly, messing up in that field could compromise the future of the athlete and after all, they're the "youth" of America...so If the ADs and the NCAA give off like it's ok to NOT play by the rules, then what is the country going to turn into............MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, sons of b*tches too money driven to play for their country, whooooooooooo

one last thing about the REFS....no human is perfect, we all make mistakes...some more nationally scrutinized than others....give em a break, they're just tryen to do their job to the best of their ability

arite, im off my sports soap box

Now I hear you and all, but I just buy into that crap. I sit back and watch a season worth of football or hockey and don't see a tenth of the bad calls that are made in one game that really counts.
Besides, aren't the refs and linesmen doing the playoffs supposed to be the leagues best?

Nope, I buy it, it is to easy of a copout answer and one that is used far to often.

I know of a pretty strong case for a player throwing a college football game. Its tough to say how often this happens but I think there is no doubt that it does occur.
