Does anyone know where I can buy programmable thermostats for myheat (gas) and a/c for my house? Home Deopt and Lowes only carrythe ones that require manual switchover from heat to a/c and vice versain name brands. They had a no-name brand that did auto changeoverbut I am leary about them; I would prefer to stay with an establishedmanufacturer even though they all may be made at the same factory inChina.
Honeywell said their two autochangeover models are sold through contractors. My hvaccontractor, which sells over the counter retail, does not carrythem. I guess I could start calling heating contractors until Ifind someone who carries them, but I wanted to do the installationmyself (satisfaction and saving the $100).
White-Rodgers also sells a good quailty product, comparable to Honeywell. Don't look for contractors, look for Heating equipment, parts and supplies. Most of the time they will sell to the public.

P.S. When you go to install it check the connections at the furnace to make sure that green is green, white is white and so on. Many times that's not the case, it doesn't matter if the red is to the green, just make sure it looks the same at the t-stat as it does at the furnace.
I do not know which is best but once while I was gone for a weekend fishing and I came home my wife installed one. If she could do it anyone can. I know it does not answer your question but the savings it has madehas now paid it off.
Intersting, I bought my two auto-stats from Home Depot about a year ago. Both are fully automatic. I have dual systems that are independent - one is gas/electric and the other is a Electric w/heat pump and emergency heat. The only swithcing I actually have to do is tell it when to use the emergency heat and when I do that, it will actually use the heat pump until it realizes the temperature is too low in which case it will also kick in the Em. heat..

Grainger's or almost any HVAC supply house can help you.......... Personally I don't like things that are "automatic". I like to be the one that determines what I need and when I need it. Too many decisions already being made for me, I want to re-take control for a change..............
I can't decide whether to move to the mountains (waaaaay back IN the mountains) or the swamps of Georgia (DEEEEEEP in the swamp)........... Maybe a small moonshine still to "hold" me over would be nice also.......
Thanks for the replies and the installation advice (particularly checking the connections at the furnace to make sure they match up). I have had auto changeover before and it is nice in the in-between seasons of spring and fall. A quick check shows Grainger's has a selection, and I can check out Aireco or WE Kingswell. Looks like I am in business - just need to decide on Honeywell or White-Rodgers.
