This happened to me.....just letting you folks know. If you bank w/ Bank of America and I imagine it could be any other bank, but that's mine......my wife was online the other day paying bills, when she was redirected to another page, which looked official. The page asked her to type in all her important information(account number, pin number, social security number, password, etc.) to confirm that's who she was and she did. After she did that she couldn't get back to the website, because when she would try repeat the process it would send her back to that page. She called the bank and they told her that was not their page.....OH SHIAT!!!! The bank checked and luckily nothing was missing.....my info. is fine, but she has to get rid of her bank card....and they probably have enough info to steal her identity. The bank told us if anything was taken out not authorized by us, it would be replaced. Banking online is not as safe as some people may think. If you come across something suspicious like that, don't do it. The bank told us that this has been happening to quite a few people......just giving you a heads up. We believe it is spyware.....a site has attached itself to our computer and we can't get rid of it.
it is called "phishing".....you need to freeze your wife's credit with the 3 main credit reporting orgs ASAP....equifax, TRW, and the other one.....armed with the information she gave them, they will probably apply for (and probably get) new cards in you wife's name and send you the bill......it is a big business and growing.....once a crook gets a hold of your SSN, you are in for a rough ride...the websites they set up look like the real thing
good luck, i think you might need it
NEVER give your SSN to anyone

That's the reason I REFUSE to bank online or pay bills online. It JUST AIN'T HAPPNIN"! I do ALL my bill paying by snailmail and will continue to do so until they run out of trees to print the checks on. UGH!!
I really feel for ya on this one. Identity theft is surely nothin' to laugh at - although you GOTTA LOVE those Citibank commercials....
Technology isn't always all that it's cracked up to be, eh? Sheesh ~ I hope that BOA is able to help ya'll out in order to find out who these creeps are that have done this to you. In the meantime - USE CASH!!

Thanks for the info......did not know that
Thanks for the support FJ.....my wife never knew she would be the one winding up in the doghouse
That really sucks. I don't do banking online but do make occasional purchases online but not before running updated spyware protection software.
From the horror stories I've read about the fact that they have your ssn could be a major pain in your ass and your credit for some time to come. I would go online and get a credit report and monitor it at least monthly for the next year or so to make sure nobody is using your ssn. Unfortunately your ssn is issued for life and can't be cancelled. Good Luck.

Hang in there~ FJ
Snail mail is no more secure than the web. Those paper checks you send have your routing number and account number on them. Bill payment envelopes may as well have "CHECK ENCLOSED" written on them.
If you put the envelopes in your mailbox at your house, stop. Scammers cruise neighborhoods looking for the little flag up. They grab an envelope out of it and they have as much information to your checking account as they would if they took your debit card.
Take them to the post office, that way there is less of a chance of someone getting their crooked dishonest hands on your hard earned money.
The lesson here is not that you shouldn't use technology to your advantage. It is that you must be wary. You don't walk around with your wallet in your back pocket when you travel. Be careful and check your own credit twice a year.
It doesn't just happen online...
The gas station i use uptown from me had a kid working there using a card swiper in his clothing somewhere which saved the info.
He then sold it to people who made new cards using the data.
They got over one thousand cards this way... ME BEING ONE... mine charged up a storm in N.Y.C.
A good friend is a local detective and got assigned my case, they traced it to 5000 in charges at Macy's in New York City.
The F.B.I. was also involved... this was early Sept. 2001... when the 11th. hit, that ended the investigation due to lack of resources(very understandable).
I did get my money back through the bank, but it was a major P.I.T.A. We had to cancel all our cards and change all our account info...
The kid working the station eventually quite before they could arrest him.
Believe me, if I ever see him again... I might be the one getting arrested!

True ~ and point well-taken. I DO take all outgoing mail TO the town Post Office and mail it there - NEVER at home. First of all, I live in the country and if you could SEE my mailbox... I don't even think the red flag thingy will stand up anymore. Kinda sad... And secondly, our mailman...well...he just don't have both oars in the water if you know what I mean.
Let's face facts here gentlemen - we live in a world of idiots, thieves and stupid people. It's up to us "smart ones" (ain't too many of us left - either) to do what we can to protect ourselves by any means necessary. As my hubby always says - "Be aware of your surroundings~!" (Or put another way - "Be aware of the idiots around you~!") Ha~!
A couple of years back my wife answered the phone at work and it was the cc center. They were inquiring as to my where about's at the time. Someone had just used my credit card in Tampa at two places that did not fit our buying patterns over the last 15/20 years. (I always use cash at the seedy places) My wife informed the lady on the phone that I was sitting across from her in Naples. The two transactions were stopped right then and there. I would call that real time proactive cc security.
i read an article that said that many. if not most, identity thefts where from going through trash, especially accounting firms to cheap to shred sensitive documents....we bought a shredder last year and use it all the time

Never respond directly to an email or call requesting account info. Always call the bank or credit company at the numbers you have on your cards.
I once got a message to call*Visa security because they suspected fraud.*I called the number and*the attendant asked for my account, I said I wasnt sure that was safe since it wasnt a phone number I was familiar with. The agent laughed, then apologised explaining "I've never gotten that response but you know, you're right."
I was told to call the service numebr on the back of my card and request transfer to the card security department. They had questionned purchases in had made in MA NY and PA all in the same day in less than 8 hours. I had gone on a long trip and my truck needed gas every 200 miles. Alls well that ends well.

you have to be careful and exercise good common sense either way - snail mail or online banking.
personally, i pay all of my bills online with the exception of my boat payment (that credit union is not yet set up for online transactions). otherwise, i pay everything online......college loans, car insurance, credit card, my truck (back when i was still making payments). overall, i've been making online transactions for about 7 or 8 years without a single problem. HOWEVER, you do have to be careful with pop up sites and things like that. i use all my sites regularly and i know what they look like and i am familiar with them.....you have to keep an eye out for phishing.
for those of you with paypal accounts, you should all be familiar with this....i constantly get emails from someone pretending to be paypal asking me to "update my account information"...the emails look legit, and the websites they direct you to look 100% legit, but the important thing to remember is, WHENEVER YOU ARE ASKED TO ENTER SSN, ACCOUNT NUMBERS, ROUTING NUMBERS, YOU MUST STOP IMMEDIATELY AND GET OUT OF THAT PAGE. all of my online accounts are set up, and they've never asked me for my information beyond the initial account setup.....they may want to verify email addresses on an annual basis, but they don't ask for you to disclose any specific account numbers or anything.
