Thinking about a September vacation in Maine with the family (wife and 3 kids all under 5 years old). Never been there. Thought about a house on the ocean but totally open to suggestions. Many thanks.
as fun as being on the water is, if you are in maine, you have got to just take a day and go driving through the mountains. My roommate from clemson lives in Turner ME, about 45 min north west of portland, that is some beautiful country up through there.
I love Northern Maine. The Moosehead region works for me. Just look under my name. Sept is a great time of year up there. More moose than people. Peace and quiet, loons, bugs are not bad, fishing is OK, a day trip to Canada, A boat trip on the Katahdin (AKA The Kate) on Moosehead, a drive around the lake, B 52 air craft crash site, dirt roads for hundreds of miles, some of the nicest people you'll come across, the list is long. Some great inns to stay in of that's your thing or rent some nice waterfront homes or camps. Spoiled or ruff it. It's your call.
FYI, Your not in Maine until your North of Augusta.

I've never been a racist. I don't like the white half either.
Maine is great in September: warm days, cool nights, most of the tourists are gone.* Although a lot of retired folks come to visit Maine in September it seems.
The Bar Harbor - Acadia National Park area is very nice, although with 3 kids under the age of 5 (I bet that keeps you busy!) there is probably limited appeal in some of the park's attractions.
The city of Portland has many children's activities including a children's museum.
Any chance you can park the kids with the grandparents and have a real vacation?
len when our family went we rented a place in camden, and rented a car to explore...camden is nice and it's centrally located. as the others have said, a day trip to bar harbor is well worth it. we also took a day and drove up into the northen forests (i forget where exactly we went, a state or national park i think) and went hiking and whitewater rafting. that is easily the most beautiful spot i saw...
one "touristy" thing we did, which turned out to be a highlight, was take a boat tour of the islands, they are incredibly beautiful, and ended up on a beach where the captain/crew did the whole clam/lobster/mussel bake...it was the best meal we had. pick one where you can bring your own beer and you'll make lots of friends!
i would love to go back...the only hassle was the traffic to/from boston
Also look at Point Sebago campground on Sebago Lake. They have great programs and fun for kids(and adults). It's not all tent sites, they have nice cabin rentals and a golf course. http://www.pointsebago.com/ .
If your sticking to the ocean a couple of friends go back every year to Biddeford. Cottage rentals are reasonable(compared to cape cod) and they have young kids too. They rent at Biddeford Pool http://66.70.157.110/images/4-6058.jpg and say the water is warmer for the kids on the pool side.
Another for Bar Harbor Arcadia National park. Great place, the Sea and the mountains a few min from each other.
