Why does the "Highway Patrol" need a boat? What part of the "highway" goes into the water -- a "waterway"?

Texas Highway Patrol = Department of Public Safety or in other words State Police. Nothing new, the Federales have had gun boats down there for years, to protect the smugglers and coyotes I guess. A group of us rented a big houseboat on Lake Amistad(next lake up from Falcon). The US and Mexico Boundary runs down the center of the Lake and the Mexican Gun boats would shadow us when we were in open waters.

Oh, and I'll summarize:

It was purchased to patrol the RIO GRANDE RIVER border with Mexico.
Problem: The boat won't float in the Rio Grande. Too shallow- you can walk across it.

I'll save you a bunch of reading..
90% of THT feels that this is an absolute waste of taxpayer money
10% of THT thinks it was a good move on the gov't part (they obviously have never been to the valley to see the dry creek bed that's aka Rio Grande River)

Now if you or I parked the trailer and probably the truck on the sidewalk we'd get a ticket......but of course it's alright for the cops to do it.

I see they didn't spare any expenses did they....the tax payer must be proud of their purchase.

More than likely it was confiscated from a perp and outfitted.

Normally they are Whalers with gun mounts when purchased.

It is new from the factory, although its no longer recent news, and as I recall, they ordered 6 of them.

You are absolutely right regular parking lots are defintely built for rigs like that. He should just park behind all the parked vehicles and block them in...f'em....

Alot of times that sort of equipment is used more for PR, recruitment or for a display for a Dept. than it is an actual work vessel. Probably what they doing from looking at the picture. When I was was with the Florida Marine Patrol we had boats that were horrible patrol boats but were great on static display at bring in on lookers and the curious..

For the record, I think that is a terrible waste of tax dollars and question machine guns on an LE rig...

The pictures are of hull #1, and yes, it's on a Boatmaster trailer from Boatmaster's factory, nothing to do with Yellowfin. Hull #2 is on an Amera-trail though, so I'm not sure why they switched.

I assumed it was a Yellowfin. The Yellowfin dealer had it on display front and center at the Houston Boat Show.

You can be such a jerk and this is another one of those times. Your reply is a BS excuse and you know it. Where in the highway traffic act does it say it is ok to park partially on the roadway and partially on the sidewalk?

I will have to say that if I was an illegal immigrant trying to get into the U.S. or was smuggling drugs seeing that thing locked and loaded would definitely stop me in my tracks and send me on my way back home. A little over kill? Yes, Waste of money? Probably. Going to keep america safe? HECK YEAH, thats the only answer I need.

Boy you just don't get it. I called you a jerk because you have consistently painted the actions of the police as those that can do no wrong. As soon as someone says hey, the police are in the wrong you instantly jump to the occasion saying, "NOPE, they're good, nothing wrong there". You ARE the reason why more and more people dislike the police!!!!!!!! As a good friend of mine used to say, "Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffff"

I suspect some of it is also burning off federal grant money and budgets that need to be depleted in order to be refunded, again, next year.
