Yikes, I now know a LOT more about pythons that I ever needed to know. This one looks like a Burmese Python (brown patches bordered in black) and they grow to 20' (just like the Rock Python).

It was comforting to read that they only "rarely" consume humans

Here's a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burmese_Python

YES. They are an invasive species that do not belong in the USA. Kill them all.

It would have no problem eating an adult human.
If I'm not mistaken, pythons (and some other snakes, don't know that all do) have the ability to unhinge their jaws to swallow exceptionally large things! GULP!!!!

Did they kill it or find it dead? Looks like trauma to the neck killed it.

Rock Pythons are not indigenous (sp?) to the Everglades. With no natural predators they will take over and squeeze out the native population of birds and other natural inhabitants. They need to be removed by whatever means because they should have never been there to begin with. There are enough bad snakes in the glades but a rock python brings bad to an all new level.

Yes - they are non native to Florida and have no natural enemies.

I suspect they were hunting it and the "trauma" you mention is a shotgun blast! I do know there is open season on them in the 'glades because they have become so invasive and are trying to work their way north, although I think environmental factors (as in hard freeze) will limit just how far they can actually spread.

I watch too much NatGeo and Discovery... they had an episode on just this thing. Or was it that Exterminators reality show thingie, where they were hunting feral pigs, which have also "taken over". One of those. But yeah, they were wrestling huge non-native snakes like that outta places all over South Florida.
