Default White Elephant Gift Idea

So I go to an adults only White Elephant Gift Party every year and I am having trouble coming up with something. White Elephant basically means that the gift can be stolen by others in the group after you open it. The limit is $50 and the gifts vary widely from liquor, to crab traps, to live fish, to sex toys and Barry Manilow DVD's. I originally wanted a box turtle, but they are pricey. Any ideas.....

Thanks, BM

I always get the max dollar amount in cash and convert it to an oddball foreign currency.

From what I've seen, the stupidest things are the ones everybody wants. A few years back, I ended up with dancing, singing Christmas tree, with big eyes that opened and shut. The stupid tree traded hands like four or five times, whatever the max limit was.

That said, WalMart has neat singing, flashing, and dancing Christmas hats right now. Totally obnoxious, but GREAT for that kind of gift environment. The Mossy Oak one with reindeer antlers sings 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer', the others are like Santa or elf hats that sing and shake bells.

Also the perfect gift for somebody's kid -- if you dislike the parents!!

I was disappointed - I couldn't find one named Ethel anywhere!

A lot of Bob's and such... wow, those ornaments have the gay pretty bad! But would be a perfect spoof gift!! Good find!

Awesome idea! Convert it to Hungarian Forints. You can give them 11,000 forints!

I got a live lobster last week. He had been on ice before the gift exchange - so he was a little slow. Great gift though! Especially with the claws not banded.... LOL Just put him in a gift bag right before the exchange.

For some reason we call that "Yankee Swap" up here.

Some people just save what they got stuck with at the last party and re-wrap it for the next. This is especially good with a gag gift that you really can't use anyway.

For a real gift, tools of any kind will be popular. Twice, I've brought floor-jacks and they changed hands several times by folks that 'stole' them from previous recipients. Once I put something forgetable (at least I forget what it was...) in one of those round wooden cheese boxes. After the game I asked why it was so popular and the lady that ended up with it said she wanted the box for her sewing stuff!

In addition to tools, a practical gift might be something like a Trac Phone and some minutes cards. SD cards. Computer accessories like headsets and cameras and really long CAT5/6 cables or signal boosters. Those last two will be popular in a group of people who travel at lot!

If you are in a snooty group then get a gift card to a "Thrift" shop or "Dollar" store. It might be funny to see who gets rid of it or who suprises you by grabbing it.

That's all I can think of for now. Have Happy... !

Our white elephant exchange usually means a gag type gift vs. a gift exchange when you can "steal" another persons gift or choose from what yet to be opened.

When we do the 'steal' gift exchange, we usually see some pretty good stuff.

White elephant on the other hand- usually stuff you wound never want to get yourself.

I got this at my department's white elephant gift exchange last night. I'm gonna let it grow on top of my file cabinet for all to see.

Sounds a little different from "Yankee Swap" then. We draw numbers to see who goes first. Number 1 picks a gift and unwraps it. Number 2 pick a gift, unwraps it and either keeps it or swaps it for what #1 has. This continues with each participant opening a fresh gift and either keeping it or swapping for a previously openned gift.

After the last package is unwrapped, #1 gets to pick from all the gifts.

Some people do get a little childish and set their gift aside hoping it is forgotten but usually everyone takes it in good fun.

We just had a gift swap that SUCKED!

My buddy told me we should bring a gift under $20 (each of us) so we brought $40 worth of gifts. My wife brought a spiral cut ham and I brought a jug of 2 stroke oil (mostly boaters at the party). Well, my buddies wife had told everyone she invited to bring a gag gift and didnt stipulate a price. I got stuck with some $5 clearance priced (Walmart price tag left on package) bath oils and my wife got a little bottle of booze worth a few bucks.
