Gone to the Dogs Even thought this is only Brant County/ Brantford, this is happening across Ontario and quite possibly across Canada.

A last-ditch appeal by canine groups and the Brant County SPCA could not stop city council from unanimously approving Monday an animal control bylaw that bans pit bulls and imposes tough measures to treat dangerous dogs.
Under the bylaw, pit bull terrie3rs, American pit bull terriers, pt bulls, Stafford bull terriers and American Staffordshire terriers, or dogs that appear to have those characteristics are now prohibited species inside city limits.
NO ONE MAY LEGALLY BREED OR SELL THEM.
Pit bulls that are already licensed, spayed or neutered and microchipped are still in the prohibited category. However, owners may keep them under a grandfather clause.
But the are also subject to more restrictions, including a requirement that they be muzzled in public at all times, whether they have ever exhibited dangerous behaviour or not.
The bylaw also contains new provisions for dogs of all other breeds that may be deemed "dangerous" or "potentially dangerous" by the Pound keeper (the SPCA), and subjects owners to higher licence fees, stronger control regulations, and tougher penalties. ......
Councillors have at various times called the bylaw "necessary to protect the public" from unpredictable pit bulls that can suddenly turn on people; and breeders and owners who don't really car about the breed. ......
Personal footnote:
Canada unlike United States has restricted the possession, sale and use of hand guns and assault rifles - for reasons of crime and deaths. I'm not surprised that we are restricting this family of canine - after all, we regularly hear of attacks via the media. Unfortunately the results are always devastating and generally to small children. Adults, cats & dogs and other animals are also the victim.
I for one am all for the enforcement of this bylaw. Owners of such now restricted dogs can not control how a dog reacts in all situations. These dogs were breed to produce explosive and killing tendencies with jaw holding power second to none. Hence there lies the problem, therefore I see it fit to regulate the spices with blank banning.
I also see it ironic that if someone kills someone with a car, they will most likely get jail time. In the cases of dog owners, they are pretty much only losing their dogs - civil law suits are not as prevalent in this country as in the States. |
