Default memory stick vs memory stick pro?

Anybody know the difference between memory stick and memory stick pro? I can't seem to discern ? I want to buy either 256 or 512 mb for the camera I gave to my wife for her birthday. It's a Sony camera, but the media doesn't necessarily have to Sony. BTW, the camera "is" memory stick pro compatible. Thanks in advance, Matt

Not a clue Tiger, I use the sticks all the time for data transfer (laptop to desktop and vise versa) and storage. I have the Attache brand in 128, 256 and 512, amazingly all are the same size........ Seems they (yours) would be the same with the exception of capacity.......

Doesnt look like speed is the difference, per the faq link given: "The maximum theoretical transfer speed of Memory Stick PRO and Memory Stick (MagicGate/High Speed Data Transfer Compatible) media is 160Mbps." Maybe the pro version is just the newest and has a higher potential capacity?

If the capacity is the same, I'd go with whatever is the cheapest, including looking at generic stuff. Shopper.com and pricewatch.com are good places to start looking for cheap stuff like that.

Thanks for the help guys! Looks like the camera accepts memory stick pro, so no big deal. Good links as well. Thanks again,

Matt,

I happened to see BOTH of them in a store tonite - looks like the "pro" can be used with MORE kinds of hardware/devices than the "standard". "Pro" can be used with MP3 and other devices - not just a camera.

I use the "standard" memory sticks in my Sony camera and they work fine. The "pro" wasn't around when I got mine for Christmas 2002.

I don't remember if there was a difference in price, but if you are using it for camera ONLY, the "standard" should do.

256 and 512mb will give you a LOT of pics - I only have a 16 and a 32mb stick.

Regards,

this is a pretty good explanation on the differences. basically, the new Pro has faster read/write times and transfer rates. Not too mention you will have larger capacity cards available.

One other consideration is if you have a Sony TV with the memory card reader in the front of it.

The TV will only accept 128mb cards for doing slide shows.

Thanks Mike. Looks similar to what I could decipher, It appears that the 256 and 512 only come in "pro" format anyway. After reading your link, it makes since. I ended up ordering a 512. Shouldn't have storage issues while taking 5mp photos with that one. Got it at ecost.com . I've found some pretty good bargains there. $73 and free shipping. 1 gig was $135 or so, but didn't figure we needed one quite that big......it sounded like a good deal though.

Bruce, can't believe you get all those high quality pictures that you take on those 2 cards. The wife's new camera eats up the 32mb card it came with quickly......10 pictures or so on 5mp setting. I think it'll do 30-35 or so on the 3mp setting though. Looks like you could use a big card for Christmas with memory so cheap right now.

Thebach, good point to consider. Thanks for mentioning. I don't have a Sony TV and seem to be covered in the television dept for the near future, so I went with one of the bigger sticks.

Thanks again,

glad to help Matt,

we had a 256 meg card when we went to Maui. I really thought that would have been enough, but it was a good thing I brought the laptop to download photos from the card. It we ran out of room by day 2.

Bigger is always Better!
