Default Banana curse?

Ever since joining sometime ago I have been curious about the banana thing onboard boats? I have asked around for months to guys I know and never got a consistent answer. Went out yesterday, fishing. After 2 hours of NO activity I break out a banana and remember what I have read here. So I adopt that alibi until we had one on. "Whew"! Is the banana thing for bad fishing, safety or what? The guy I went with from Mass, has a thing about whistling while onboard and winds picking up also. Thanks

I don't know where it came from, but I once went on*a charter with Bouncer Smith in Miami.* He*had a*NO BANANAS*sign*and checked our t-shirt labels before we got on the boat and cut off the fruit of the loom tags.* Later that night in Government Cut a chiquita banana freighter went by and the captian said the night was jinxed and he was right.* No*quality tarpon were landed.*

To answer your question, my understanding of the banana superstition is that it pertains to fishing.

I have no idea where it comes from but it is pretty prevalent among serious fisherman.

You're lucky that's all that happened (or didn't happen). It just as easily could have been a sinking after the boat was burnt to the waterline.

As a matter of fact, here's what happens if you bring a banana on my boat.

It's just superstition. Jeez- banannas have always been a part of my fishing or hunting lunches all my life, plus I eat one on my cereal before I go fishing, and it has never had a bad effect on my fishing or hunting.
Banannas are a great source of Potassium, and are a good pick -me- up when you get tired on the water.
It's nothing but Bull Pucky

NOTE TO SELF: If ever have the chance to fish with Shag, leave bananas at home!
Another note: The ones we came home weren't big enough for photos.

"That and they use to keep bananas below deck
the root and go sour and some sailors use to
slid and break their backs .

Here's a true story to illustrate the unbelievable power of the banana curse.

Last January my fishing buddy and I took bananas with us on a striper fishing trip. We actually snacked on them while we were fishing.

We only caught 38 stripers (20 or so were over 18lbs, biggest were 26 and 28lbs) and four bluefish in the 10 to 13lb range. We had about a 30 minute lull where we did NOT have a fish on.

Just imagine what we would have caught if we hadn't brought those cursed bananas onboard.

If you read Linda Greenlaw's book - she's the Swordfish Captian of the Hannah Bowden - sister ship to the Andrea Gail of perfect Storm fame, she writes about some bad luck symbols:

Whistling on board- whistles up the wind
Blue paint on hull - hard to see for S.A.R.
the number 13, just because
pigs - can't swim and/or slice their own throats trying

She claims to want to someday buy a boat, paint it blue and name it "13 Whistling Pigs"

Banana on board is not just for fishing boats. I believe it started when they were hauling bananas in the old days and would find tarantulas hiding in the bunches of bananas.

I've heard everything from the tarantula thing to some famous guide in Hawaii made it up only 50 years ago.

Pigs can swim and so can 500 lb sows.
