Default Direct TV is super SLOW!

Why the hell is my Direct TV guide and other functions so slow. Man its getting to the point where I want to throw the receiver in the canal.

It sometimes takes a full 5 seconds for a command from the remote to register on the guide or DVR or other function. I know its not the remote itself because I took the remote from the bedroom TV and it does the same. The bedroom receiver is not and HD and does not have a DVR and its lightning fast.

Even when I operate the receiver by pushing the buttons on the receiver its still slow so I know the remote has nothing to do with it.

Anyone else have this issue or a remedy? It has always had a small lag but now its horrible. It sometimes takes 2-3 minutes just to get a show going on the DVR.

Chris,

What model receivers are they, & have you tried unplugging them and resetting them?

I had the same problem with my HD DVR and found out it was an older model. I've been with direct tv since 2006. I called them and told them my receiver kept rebooting by itself (which it did every once in awhile but not near as many times as I told them) and they troubleshooted some stuff on the phone and then sent out a rep with a new HD DVR receiver. FOR FREE. I did have to sign on to another 2 years though but it's lighting fast and has a crap load more space for my tv shows then the old one did.

Same thing here...especially when merely going from one channel to the next without the guide on....guess I'll have to call...my receiver is relatively new with HD & DVR

My family has had DirecTV for 11 years now, and they are still not willing to work with us on most things. Our guides have been very slow lately. I am very good with anything technical, so I did all the troubleshooting things myself. I am canceling at the end of the month, U-Verse is getting installed December 1st.

The receiver is an 'HR22/100" and the software is "0x40e"

Its less than 2 years old. I watch the installer take it out of the box.

It used to be pretty fast. Unplugging it and replugging it seems to have no effect.

Is there a factory reset option on it anywhere? You might try searching around and see if you can uncover the same. Sad but true, software developers aren't what they used to be and over time [just like windows] you can accumulate problems in any device.

If there's a hard reset for it, you'll lose all your customizations but should get back your original performance, assuming it isn't a datastream change causing the issue.

Thinking about signing on with DTV over here, tired of paying comcast + tivo.

I've tried everything on mine. Super Slow. I don't have a canal, but I've threatened to toss my remote in the woods!

It happened to me with a new DVR reciever. I have two other dinosaur recievers and they are lightening, but not DVR so I'm going to assume its this.

I've reset a kazillion times over the last two years, this isn't the problem. I think its just simply an old computer type problem. Everyone else has X-Box 360 live and I have Atari, so to speak.

If you want good customer service out of them you have to cancel your servive. I had issues and they would do nothing for me. I wanted to ad a reciever, had two wanted three and was told they could sell me one no problem. I was a 12 year loyal customer, Nfl package, movie package ect. the good service is only for new subscribers. Now they want to jump through hoops like circus dogs, four free recievers, free hd dvr upgrade, free install and better pricing than they ever offered me before. They will even buy me out of my Dish contract. What a bunch of idiots! I do like their programing better than Dish and will change back sometime, but how stupid is it to go through all of this when they could have just given me another reciever.

I had my original recievers replaced just this week. I got tired of the slow guide and the re-boots that seemed to occur everytime a plane flew over the house. They were both 10yrs old. Got the plain Jane recievers and they work great. Those new remotes take some getting used to, though All those buttons...and the colors...

It does have a reset but I have some programs on the DVR that I don't want to lose.

This sucks! It seems like no matter what service you have be it cell phone, cable, internet, home phone or whatever. When you first sign up they treat you like gold and everything works perfect. Then a year or so the crap starts happening and they don't give a crap.

Reminders and Updates:
95 Configuration Issues:
The impacted Set Top Boxes are H21-100 and H21-200 running code 0x440c as well as the H24-100 running 0x40d software. All other platforms are not impacted.
The symptom is that when using a standalone SWiM unit (SWiM-8 or SWiM-16, or even old SWiM-5), the installer cannot select any dish types that include Slimline-3 or Slimline-5, except for options 17 (Slimline-3 SWiM) or 18 (Slimline-5 SWiM). If any of the Slimline combinations (listed below) are selected, the popup menu will instantly expand back open.
Problem dish combinations:
03: Slimline-3
04: Slimline-5
07: Slimline-3 & 72.5
08: Slimline-5 & 72.5
11: Slimline-3 & 95
12: Slimline-5 & 95
15: Slimline-3 & 72.5 & 95
16: Slimline-5 & 72.5 & 95
The software groups have identified a workaround that will allow the required dish type to be selected. For example, if ODU set up 11 (Slimline-3 and 95) is required, the installer should select any dish type that can be selected (for example, 17: Slimline-3 SWM). Then, using the numeric keys on the remote control, type "1,1" and the selection will change to "11: Slimline-3 & 95." Or "Slimline-5 & 95."
Please pass this information on to technicians so they can correctly select the Slimline-3 + 95 combination when necessary and avoid the need to call ISS for a waiver.
We will keep you all informed as we get confirmation on the software download that will correct this issue.
D11-800 and D11-300 Software Downloads:
As of Monday, September 20, 2010, the software for the D11-800 and D11-300 will no longer be on the satellite 24 hours per day.
Rules for Forcing Downloads:
- Customer Care Agents should never instruct customers to force software download for any model.
- Technicians should never force downloads on any existing receivers in customers’ homes.
- Starting Sept 20, technicians installing any D11-800 or D11-300 should not force a download.
If a forced download is done on these models, the software download status screen may stay at 0%, or it may start acquiring the software, but not complete. If a forced download will not complete, reset the receiver. Any model that is on older software will acquire the most current software within 24 hours.
Please do not force a Download on the D11-800 and D11-300 receivers

MULTIPLE RECEIVER TYPES ADVANCED SERVICES
D, R15 / 16 and H20 IRD's: The Blue (mini-guide) and Yellow (TV Options) remote control buttons may not work on some channels, for example: News & Sports MIX channels, The Weather Channel, Sports channels that have Score Guide functionality (RSN, 700's, ESPN, etc). Downloads are rolling out to resolve.
H20's, D’s, R15 / 16 (not on HR2x, R22, H21, H23) – Caller ID OSD does not appear, but the call shows up in the logs. This can occur on channels with Interactive applications, for example: News & Sports MIX channels, The Weather Channel, Sports channels that have Score Guide functionality (RSN, 700's, ESPN, etc).
TV Apps – Customers may receive an error when trying to load TV Apps on various IRD models that states "TV App is currently unavailable. Please try again later." Guide customer through the following steps, and escalate the outcome to the NET: 1. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the IRD 2. Manually reset the IRD 3. Once the IRD fully recovers, plug in the Ethernet cable. 4. Run through and restore network settings, verifying connectivity to the internet. 5. Try to load TV Apps. Note: It may take up to 2 hours for applications to fully load
TV Apps – Customers may experience an Error 301 when attempting to load TV Apps. This means the application was unable to connect to the server. Have the customer try the following steps, before submitting a ticket. 1. Run Network Services Tests (as this will attempt to retrieve the certificate). 2. If that doesn’t work, try a system reboot, and wait ~30 minutes afterwards to try again. 3. Escalate to FPR with customer account information.
D10, D11, D12 – After a receiver reboot, the "Favorites" list will revert back to "All Channels."
R15 / R16 – Recording icons may randomly appear in the guide, even though recordings have not been scheduled. Recording icons may show in the guide for shows NOT scheduled to record. Customers may think they missed a recording.
R15 / R16 – Recording issues: DVR may record programs at the wrong time, record programs not scheduled to record, or start recording immediately rather than at a selected program’s time. Have customer go to Menu > Manage Recordings > Rec. Defaults > Set Defaults. If series recordings are affected, please try to have the customer set record defaults and also set a manual recording for that show instead.
H20 100/600: IRDs – Captioning may not be appearing on channels with Interactive applications. Example: News & Sports MIX channels, The Weather Channel, Sports channels that have Score Guide functionality (RSN, 700's, ESPN etc)
H20-100/600 – Unable to change resolution while on interactive (Score Guide) channels. What to do: Pressing the "Exit" button on the remote control while on a sports channel will exit Score Guide and allow customer to change resolution on the IRD.
H21 or H23 – During boot up, the IRD will get stuck on Step 1 of 2 Checking Satellite Settings. This applies to H21 and H23 ONLY. Do NOT try this on any other model that may have similar symptoms. 1) Reboot the STB again. If stuck on 1 of 2 for more than 5 minutes, then follow these steps. 2) Press the red reset button and then immediately simultaneously press and hold the MENU and DOWN buttons on the front panel. 3) While holding down the MENU / DOWN buttons, the customer will see "Hello. Your DIRECTV receiver is starting up", then "Almost There, a few more second please", and then "Just a few more seconds…. 4) When they see the screen that says "Just a few more seconds…, they can release the MENU / DOWN. 5) If done properly, the next screen they see should be "Hello Your DIRECTV receiver is starting up", and the receiver should complete the boot up cycle and they should get video. If the customer does not see the 2nd "Hello" screen and instead gets the "Running receiver self-check", then they did not press and hold the MENU / DOWN quick enough after pressing the red reset button. Go back to step 2 and try again. 6) Once the customer is back to video, they will need to reset their Favorites lists and Auto tunes. 7) Customers should also verify that the Parental Controls are unchanged.
HR24-100 and SD programs only - Customers with Whole-Home service may experience the following OSD "no audio/video data packets received from server" when an HR24-100 is the DVR upon which the program is recorded (called the "server") and another receiver is viewing that content remotely (called the "client"). Engineering is aware of the issue and investigating. Advise customer to go to the "server" DVR and tune it to an HD channel. They should then be able to view the recorded content on the client.
HR2x (mostly seen on HR23-700) – Customers may experience intermittent remote control issues. This is related to issues with the remote not working when set to IR Mode. Advise customer on how to use RF Mode. If the customer has a remote that supports RF, change the remote to RF Mode. If the RF Mode works, educate the customer that they must use RF Mode. If the customer does not have a remote that supports RF or the remote will not work in either RF or IR Mode, replace the remote. If the new remote does not fix the issue, escalate to the NET.
HR2x/R22 – Video background intermittently flashes through screen saver when playback is paused or Sonic channel song title is showing.
HR20-100 – Customers may see a Grey screen on their local channels. Advise the customer they can wait 10 seconds then use pause / play / rewind to see video. Escalate channel information via
the FPR process. FPR will escalate for possible broadcast issue.

there are so many possible issues from the combinations of software, hardware, and local channel issues, after all you are using a 'computer' for your television viewing and though all the combinations of variables it is a challenge and ensuring old (legacy) equipment is compatible with newer technology can be formidable..

Please be patient as we work to solutions. We always do.

If you have had DTV for 5+ years, do call for possible upgrades. Yes we work for new customers as is means survival, but do try to accommodate exisiting customers more than the other providers.

Having worked for several providers, I can assure you DTV is at the forefront on customer service and technology. Perfect, no - but the best, yes.

install problem, not a sat problem. I stayed at a hotel couple weeks ago with Uverse, and pixelated all week, continually. Bet my paycheck it was an install problem, not a Uverse problem.

Cable is the easiest (techno wise) of formats. You can get away with a lot of BS install work from the fact that it is 'hardwired' and has boosters everywhere/

With sat, you should lose signal about as often as a cable; with us it just the fact you 'know' why; it's raining hard. My system only loses siggnal for a couple minutes when there is a tornado coming. Proved it a few times the last couple years. Otherwise, no issues. So, when I lose signal I get my family in the closet.
