Default wheat pennies

about to get rid of 25 years of pennies been throwing them into large water bottles and now they are in the way. im sure there must be some old ones mixed in. is it worth checking out any of the old wheat pennies or just toss them in the machine with the rest of them

best bet is to donate the old ones and take the retail value off your taxes. Otherwise spend a zillion hours trying to sell an odd penny here and there....or if a fellow THTer offers you a beer for 4 rolls of them, that's not a bad deal, either!

Some of them might be worth a few bucks, (the 1909 VDB S Used to retail for about $125.)But I wouldn't expect to make a mortgage payment or anything.

If he has been collecting pennies for 25 years there probably isn't much in there. The condition is also a factor. Anything in general circulation gets worn fairly fast.

My grandfather who died 25 years ago was a penny collector. I have $700 in wheat pennies all seperated in tubes in the attic. I'm sure the combined value wouldn't pay for the hernia opperation to bring them to market so there they sit.

They are worth 2 to 3 times more as scrap copper. Someone is going to get the additional value - why not you? The pennies were still mostly copper up till 1982 so its not just the wheat ones that are of value.

I don't know if its illegal to scrap them but worth checking it out

I have a 55 wheat penny, will sell it to you for 1 doll,
if you pay 3.95 for shipping...

Wheat pennies go for 1 doll to 20 doll on ebay all the time,
Sometimes even more depending on the condition

If you don't enjoy looking through them and wondering if the next one might be valuable, just junk them or give them to some kid in the neighborhood with a couple of penny books.
