I would be more interested in numbers that showed deaths and injuries as a result of vehicle malfunction. A recall for a faulty AC control knob should not be compared to one for an exploding headrest

Stop with this crap about the government is doing because of GM that is total bovine manure. This problem began in 2002! It was a known problem in the business and I was amazed that Toyota did a great job of hiding it. Remember up until now Toyota had product updates that were nothing more than a recall. Anyone remember the Prius just stopping on the highway? No recall just a product improvement. And believe me I hate to see what Toyota is going through but guess what they have to wear the big boy pants now. You do not handle a recall of this magnitude by saying there is no problem it is the drivers fault. Audi did real well with that one and it was true!!

I don't get what the attack on Ford is all about...They are total up recalls for an entire 38 year span. Umm...at toyota's rate they'll only need 3 more years of crap slinging.

IF Toyota was Ford, they would have dragged this thru the courts for as long as they could...

http://www.autosafety.org/stalling-f...e-class-action

Quote:
On December 9, 2002, after five years of litigation, a settlement was reached in a national class action in California, Howard v. Ford Motor Co., that reimbursed owners for ignition module failures that occurred within the first 100,000 miles, and extended the warranty to 100,000 miles for any vehicle still under this mileage
Now this was a module that was causing cars to stall on highways. I had a "87 Mustang GT and it stalled on any trips over 100 miles. No one could fix this problem. I thanked God the day it was stolen from the front of my house. The cops found it about 125 miles from where it was stolen...in flames...maybe it stalled on the thieves and they torched it.

Ford knew about this defect from the get go, yet it didn't stop them from concealing the truth from the Gov , and continued using the item from 1983 to 1995 over a dacade before Cali sued em and made em change the defect.

A real class act...

List of cars Ford was forced to recall by California...

Look they all have their problems just like our outboards - I would not buy any foreign car but NOT because of quality - they are as good as any American car and probably many are more maintenance free from what everyone says.

But her is my take - the NHTSA or whatever agency has become very cozy with ALL the manufactures. have you seen the hearings - its a freegin revolving door between the agency, Toyota, ford, GM and the Congress - they all have connections. This was uncovered years ago and NHTSA did Nothing - Its becoming an Oligargy - the inmates are running the asylum - this has been a very steady deterioration -especially the last 15 years or so. these agencies are suppose to be enforcers - cops - they have to say no - they have to come down on these companies but more often than not they view themselves as being "partners". I have heard that word a million times if I heard it once.

I worked as an engineer for 2 State and one Federal regulatory agencies afor several years and it was always the same story. Pressure from "above" to look the other way - hey we gotta protect the companies they are out backbone they pay taxes blah blah blah - (mostly - they pay our campaigns ). This said - I don't think they are any more or less corrupt or immoral than the private companies I have worked for.

As far as the companies complying with repair sharing information and state emissions requirements I give the American Companies - GM especially an A. The japs maybe a B and the freegin VW piece of crap volks and F - they are probably still in violation.

Don't worry though in 20 years your kids will be driving iraqimobiles and afghani saucers.

There has been plenty of bad Ford publicity over the years too. I had a 1997 Ford Explorer, low miles, all wheel drive, leather, sunroof, V-8, every option. I had young kids and bought into the tire failure/rollover hoopla, took a bath when I got rid of it. Whenever I buy another truck it will probably be a Ford, but I'm gunna make sure it's a model you can replace the spark plugs without breaking them off.

Yeah..I haven't heard anyone bring up the Ford Pinto. I'm sure everyone remembers that--where Ford figured out that it was cheaper to allow a number of people to die in fiery rear end collisions rather than pay to fix the defect the cars had.

Anyone one remember the recall Audi had on the 5000's? Jumping in gear and killing people. People are quick to jump on the band wagon when in reality. Most all of then have had their fair share of recalls. Some just do a better job at addressing them and others hide info until it hits the fan. Even the tire companies. Remember Ford & Firestone and what they tried to fight until they couldn't fight it no more? The list can go on and on. I'm sure there will be many more to come from all brands. Just me 2 cents worth. Love ya, mean it!

You have no room to talk about building or rebuilding a quality product.

Pinto? LOL When was that? 35 years ago? I heard model Ts didnt have seatbelts either, WTF, why no recall for that?? LOL

In 2010 we expect a little more out of a car.

Furthermore, what is your point? That because some other company did such-and-such that Toyota should not catch any grief?

Yeah..the fact Ford figured out that human life wasn't worth the cost of a recall isn't important at all.

Oh so according to your worldly expertise, anyone who drives a foreign car is a pickle sniffer? You really should stick to what you really know and what is that exactly??
