This is already happening and was big news a month or so ago. The top commander in the Middle East issued an order that any soldier becoming pregnant, or making somebody else pregnant, can be court martialled due to weakening of the forces as the pregnant person has to leave the theater.

I'm not sure the exact punishment was, but i'm pretty sure it went poorly for her

yeah i know... but when you're depressed, stressed, and over seas you're going to break those rules thinking you can get away with it

When I was in the Army (I was USMC aviation for 3 years, then Army Infantry for 5 years) I dated a girl that was an MP. I met her in a leadership course. She was drop-dead gorgeous, and very much a lady, but I'd put her up against most men for most any military skill. She had the physical strength to get the job done, too. She was a damn fine soldier. If that's the kind of woman we're talking about, then I'd fight next to her in a minute.

Honestly, I think one of the biggest barriers for women in combat isn't even the women themselves, but the fact that we (men) tend to coddle them and try to caretake them. Yes, they have different hygenic needs, but I think that those can be overcome.....hell, PMS may even work to your advantage in combat. I can come up with plenty of arguments against it, but in the end they mostly come down more to how the genders interact that any real or perceived inadequacy of the female gender.

The biggest issue is pregancy in my mind. The average female military person is.. not like the one you described

I agree on the pregnancy issue....but only up to a point, because while some people cant seem to figure out how to prevent it, it is preventable.

On the other part, you're right there also, but there are a whole lot of males that don't cut it, too.

As mentioned above Austraila and a few other countries already allow women in combat roles without any major problems so I think a lot of it is what is culturally acceptable in different areas. Sure there are physical differences between men and women and somethings women would not physically beable to do but I think most of it is existing attitude on the different roles of the sexes.

I dont think they should be on subs, someones bound to get knocked up and then what? What if we are at war? the boat can just go to the nearest port if they are tracking someone. The same for front line infantry if a female soliger is captured she is going to raped by EVERYONE who has control of her. What if she gets pregnant on the front lines? She has to be sent back and replaced. Keep them in the rear with the gear where they dont have to worry about capture. They can have all of the equalitiy they want but I bet they wont be happy after they have been raped for the 40th time in an day.

I agree and this is somewhat of a worry for me....I have two sons so not an issue...but I would hate to think of my daughter on the front lines with the possibility of capture. I could only imagine what sadistic games the enemy would play with a female.

Considering how enlightened our current enemy is with regards to womans rights and seeing how they treat their family, I can not imagine what would be instore for them.

Now I'm not in favor of that at all! Basically what you are saying is give the girls ALL the good jobs and leave ALL the shitty jobs for the guys.

In the early 80's I was in the Army and assigned to a Landing Craft, one of the few that had female crew members. For the most part they did thier job as well as others and as capable as most. Up to a point. Sometimes brute strenght is needed as a seaman, it just wasn't there. The major problem is thier plumbing. We were on a long haul one time with 2 female engineers and 3 female deck hands. What trip, we lost 4 out of the 5 due to "female issues" along the way. With just 3 deck hands left that was one rough trip, 2hrs. on and 4 off around the clock for days a time plain sucked. Anytime you puts males and females together things happen, relationships form. I should know I've been married to a Army seaman off that vessel for 28 years now.

I think a lot of this is true and agree with most but there is a reason why there are different sports leagues for men and women form hi school to college and the pros. there are times when we cannot overlook the differences. Plus as said above you are simply born with some inner impulse to protect and coddle the women. IMHO You will not treat them equally no matter how much you train. I mean as Garett says there is sexual tension in just about every work environment I have been in, but in some situations it can have severe effects on comradarie and accomplishing the mission.

(see thread on hurt locker part 2....in a few minutes..)

I also want to add that I was in the military many many way to many years ago and am no expert on the subject and maybe things have changed but I think that almost primal impulse to protect the women is way deep down inside us and isn't going to get legislated out in many many generations, if ever.

Do you have any idea how russian troops were brutally raped by the afghan mujihan when the russians were chased out of afghanastan. It is not something you will ever read about in news papers. Do you know that our captured soldiers were eaten by their japanese captors during ww2 in some but not all instances. War is not civilized incase you were not aware?

In years past I was all in favor of women in construction/military/firefighters etc. It was years before I learned that they are not held to the same physical standards as men and that made all the difference in the world. Essentially, they are not physically qualified but they're given a free pass and that weakens the standards for everyone. I understand that in basic now you don't have to run at X speed for X distance or do X pushups, you just have to "put forth your best effort". It really places an unfair burden on male soldiers for two reasons: They have to do the heavy lifting for both themselves and the weaker members plus the inherent psychological factor of men protecting women and that's a very strong instinct. To put it simply, if you can't meet the physical standards without accommodations, you just are not qualified period. There are reasons for having physical standards and we need to recognize and respect those reasons.
