Random Quote: Tell the girl at the bar that I named my boat "AFTER YOU".
I have been paying child support for almost 18 years. In a couple of months, my son will turn 18. My court order states that I am required to pay until the age of 18.
I know some people who are ordered to pay until the child finishes school.
Question:
Can my ex go back to revise this order to include school/college when I stop paying on the 18th birthday?
Jeff

There are many free websites (I don't want to post a link), just google legal advice and you'll be directed to sites where REAL attorneys answer simple legal questions (like yours).
In your case, you need an answer from an attorney practicing in North Caroline (or the state where your child/support is).

Do you WANT to stop supporting your son or just the demand by the court?
I will always support my son. I want to be finished with the woman for good.

if your divorce papers say your obligated to pay support until son reaches age of 18 or continues education its 23..then you pay as long as your son keeps his home base at your ex-wifes house..
depending on which state you may only be obligated to pay until he reaches 18..but i hear ya on the law..i will never stop supporting my sons but i take issue from some liberal arse judge telling me what i should pay or do!
i hear ya there...prolly doesnt have an ex-wife who smokes 3 paks a day, non-working stay at home thud, 3 dogs and found out the grass wasnt greener on the other side so here main objective is to make yourlife miserable!
No...It wasn't intended to be a cheap shot. I cast no aspersions. Was just curious what the OP was intending. Some people have jerk-off kids too, as well as ex-wives. But I meant no disrespect.
Do you have a copy of your divorce decree? It should state in there exactly what your obligations are.
Mine said until my daughter reached 18 years old. That's when I stopped giving money to the mother and started giving it to my daughter for school.
Read your decree.

Yea, know what you mean. Sometimes the $$ brings out the worst in folks.

Therein lies "The Rest of the Story."
We were never married. All I have is a court order and it clearly states until the age of 18.

Absent some sort of child support decision by a court, there isn't any legal requirements for parents to support children once they turn 18 years of age. Both parents can agree that their 18 year old is on his or her own and not be legally obligated for any more expenses for the kid. It really can be cheaper to stay married.

As others have said you probably really should get some professional advice before making a decision. That said, in Oregon your child (not the custodial parent) can sue to have support continued while they're in school. Your actual court order may or may not make this possibility clear.
I'm on year 19 and counting but at least my daughter was smart enough to work out a deal with me instead of going the court route.
I always thought that one had to pay until the child finished school or finished High School. I don't think they can force you to pay anything after they turn 18 as they are then a legal adult.
Jeff, this is America of course she can go back to court and ask a judge to continue the child support due to his enrollment as a full time student .
( hope she's not on THT )
How about once the child turns 18 you send payment directly to the child. You can deposit right into an account, doucument things in case it does wind up in court.
Aint that the shit? If you were married to the mother then legally you would have no obligation to support the child after they turn 18 wether they were in school or not. Im not saying you shouldnt if you have the means, but to be forced to by the state is complete bullshit.
