Default Anyone Running Radar Detectors with

red light and speed camera databases?

I have a Passport S2 that is in for repair (fell from the windshield due to the cheesy suction cup mounting) one too many times. The new units with the GPS and traffic camera database from Escort are $500. Cobra does not have a great reputation, but they came out with a new model, the 9960 and 9970G that have a lifetime database subscription included that can be had for around $200.

Anyone have experience with the Cobra detectors?

I have enjoyed my Escort 8500 X50 with the ZR4 Laser Jammer (shifter) and would be inclined to get another Escort.

I have a Cobra, but my dad has Passports in his car and also my moms car. I like the Passports better, but being 19 I was on a restricted budget. I have had no problems with the Cobra, but if you want to spend a little more I would say go with a Passport.

Well, I was trying to not spend more since my Escort S2 will be all updated when I get it back from the factory so I can run that when on the highway. I was wondering how the filtering is on the Cobra relative to false alerts and such when running in urban areas. Thanks!

I can see one for the highway but if your actually running red lights with it your taking way to much of a risk.

Tell me you not in Houston that is all I want to know.

The cities are using these red light cameras as revenue generators, they have nothing to do with "safety" and in fact cause more accidents than they "prevent" due to people slamming on their brakes in fear of being ticketed. I am probably one of the safest drivers you will ever meet but anybody can get nailed by these automated cash registers. Do a little research on them for yourself and see what people plagued with these in their cities are up against. I travel and like to be prepared for what I may be up against relative to these things.

From another Houstonian, I do hope you are traveling to other cities. Haven't seen people slam on the brakes because of a red light. Don't think accidents are up. When the cameras started about 50% of the tickets went to the police who were in the habit of running red lights. Now the police stop too!

Sometimes what one "thinks" and reality are two different things.

and one from Texas

It isn't rocket science to figure out why these are being placed.

I have the PAssport 9500i and it has been perfect for the past few years and many many miles. Saved my arse more than a few times. When it goes I am upgrading to the 9500ix that has camera locations in it.

Now most cameras are at red lights and I have no desire to run them but in my area, pole mounted cameras are popping up on the highway as well. They are in test mode now I think, and used for traffic volume monitoring but I do know that they are soon to be equipped with lazer and will be able mark your speed and take a picture even at very high speeds. That is what I want the traffic cam option for. I think some traffic light cameras can also mark speed through the intersection.

Technology is advancing fast so watch the mail for tickets in the near future unless you have protection from teh eye in teh sky.

You nailed it 1-4water, devices everywhere and you can't even debate the fact when a ticket shows up in the mail. I see the X-way traffic cameras frequently and in fact have access to those control rooms on occasion. You would not believe how far those things can zoom in to see what is going on!

I gave up deliberately speeding when I was still wet behind the ears, after responding to my first fatal MVA and seeing the young lady's brains plastered all over the inside of the vehicle. But the fact is, all you need to do is be stopped slightly beyond the "stop zone" at a light and you will be ticketed.

My ongoing endeavor is to be as aware of my surroundings as possible due to highway congestion and some of the worst drivers with even worse attitudes I have ever seen. These camera intersections pose a potential risk, especially if they have shortened the yellow time interval simply to boost revenue.

The Cobra 9970G has features that include emergency vehicle approach warning (picks up the transmitted signal from them) and also warns you if you are exceeding the speed limit. This is a great safety feature but unfortunately not available on the Escort.

Some of the red light cameras are being equipped with what is known as "speed on green". This tasty feature hits you with a speed camera on green as you pass under it.
