Default Birdseye "steamfresh"frozen vegetables Made in China !

I could not believe that now I have to check frozen vegetables to see if they are from the U.S. - Just thought I would pass this on - Birdseye puts the country of origin in small print with the date code -

I guess the big picture is that it's pretty frightening how dependent this country is on imports. Thirty years ago it was cars and electronics. Now it's defense hardware and food. I'm ok with a little isolationism.

Thanks for the heads up. If its not paperwork and imaginary and virtual products - you can probably guess its not made here. The globbleization road was one way there is no turn around. I think my garden will be a little bigger this year.

We are feeding a bunch of families from our small organic farm in the Mountains of NC. I am appalled by the crap I see in the supermarkets now.

I believe the vegies are since all of the freight and transportation is within the country. Some of the fruit ingredients probably come from out of the country.

watch out for spices made in china almost all galic comes from there. these people in china will piss puke and shit on everything they grow and will water with heavy metals that have come from polluted wells or rivers. So much for the department of agriculture watching out for us. Can any one say BIG GARDEN this year!

Anyone know of something to keep city soot off the garden?
I've tried plastic and the black weed barrier material stretched across (suspended).
Thanks for the heads-up, I'll be reading a little closer now....

I just read recently that China is a major supplier of pharmaceuticals. They are the only source of some vital drugs. What happens if they decide they don't want to ship them here some day? We could all adjust and get by if they stopped sending us drywall, stainless steel, or vegetables, but if they are the only supplier of certain drugs and one day they decide to cut off that supply...

I don't know what our drug industry is capable of doing to adjust to a problem like that but it really makes me think we are selling ourselves down the river.

Spokewrench - thanks for sharing your concern. Here at Birds Eye Foods, we demand that our vegetables are safe and of the highest quality. We make it a priority to source vegetables domestically; in fact, most Birds Eye Steamfresh vegetables are grown and processed in the United States. However, there are some varieties such as sugar snap peas and water chestnuts that are grown in China as they cannot be sourced entirely from other countries or the U.S.

The food safety and quality experts at Birds Eye Foods inspect and approve all global suppliers, including China, to ensure safety and quality. Should you prefer to purchase vegetables grown in the United States only, Birds Eye Foods marks each package with the vegetables' country of origin near the package's UPC. In light of this new information, we hope you continue to enjoy Birds Eye Steamfresh vegetables.

1)Nafta had nothing to do with China, other than both containing five letters and ending with A.
2)If you want only US grown fruits veggies, then you can only have veggies that they can grow here. We are used to having a large selection of fruits and veggies, and having them be available all year round. That can't happen unless we get stuff from other countries.
3)If you want to reward the little guy and someone local, buy organic and twice the cost.
4)We want to buy the best stuff at the cheapest prices. Most veggies are a commodity and treated as such. As a result, companies make their mark by snazzy packaging, better pricing, the ability to steam in the bag, add a tasty sauce, better advertising, lower cost, or the freshest, best looking, uniform, consistent, visually appealing product. If you want cheaper, you buy market basket or shaw's store brand. The Bird's eye will often look better, both in actual edible product and packaging. If they want to stay competitive and Chinese peas are cheaper by the delivered ton than peas from Indiana, they would buy from China.

I don't see the big deal. We have migrant farm workers in the states bordering Mexico being used as cheap labor to pick lettuce. Just because that lettuce is grown in the US doesn't automatically make it any safer.
