Well, I don't have a financial district nearby, and no airport to speak of, but there sure are some good deals in my neck of the woods too.

I was limited in where I could look because of work, so FL was not feasible for me. We now have a place down on Padre Island, in Corpus Christi. You can get a 4BR/2BA on the water for starting around $250K. My friends just bought a beautiful place for $270K there, almost brand new. Its amazing some of the deals now.

In addition to FL, Might want to check out Houston, it has lots of banks, great flights, and two nice canal front communities (Tiki Island and Bayou Vista). $300K there gets you a really nice place.

A place like mine would run about $275-300K. I have 65' of waterfront and am on a 350' wide canal.

We have great fishing (world class inshore fishing and very good offshore), gulf access is about 20 mins away (its close but some no wake zones), and no snow.

Heres a pic from my deck:

And from the water with our boat:

One thing that helped me was that the Corpus area is statistically much less likely to get hit by a storm than any other part of TX or the Gulf coast.

$500K here would get you a really over the top house. 4000sf, pool, huge deck, great view, etc.

Love Port A and the whole area. We used to go fishing and just screw around down there when we lived in Dallas. I am not much of a fisherman (actually, I am horrible), but it is pretty hard to beat all the options there, from tuna far outside to redfish inside. In one memorable day we hooked amberjacks, mahi, snapper and a big mako, we weren't even trying hard and it was off season. You never know what's going to be on the other end when you get a strike. Yeah, you have to catch a connection to DFW or IAH to get anywhere. Of course you are somewhere either of those places; great business climate in TX.

We have actually spent some time in the Houston area. We looked very closely around the Seabrook area on Clear Lake. We liked it a lot, but ended up not making the move. At that time the company I worked for decided they wanted me to stay in the Bay Area and threw some more cash at me.

Sounds good but I really need the airport and Financial District for my employer to sign off on the deal.
