Default SW Florida suggestions

See, I am finally learning to start my own threads without hijacking someone elses. Similar question as posted for recommendations on a Gulf Coast Vacation.

I will attempt to make the background as brief as possible. I am 40 with a lady friend up in NJ that wants to come down for a week or so to hang out. I live on the SE Coast (just north of WPB) and have done it all south of me through the Keys. I would like to trailer the boat over just to go out once or twice, maybe a dusk booze cruise type of event one evening. The bulk of the time would be spent at the beach, tiki bar, resturants, etc. I am sure I will need to take her out to a club one night for dancing as well.

Anyone have any suggestions on which city or where to stay for someone in our age bracket?

Tampa over Sarasota (old) or St Pete (older) is probably more in tune with someone your age for night life. As far as boating make sure you get to Caladesi Island, you can launch from Seminole ramp. Egmont Key at the mouth of Tampa Bay is nice, you can launch from Ft Desoto.

Shepards on the mouth (N end) of Clearwater pass is a hot spot for college age kids over on the Gulf coast. Clearwater Beach is a popular spot for all ages. The Sheraton Sand Key is on the south end of Clearwater Pass, across the street is the Marriott.

Thanks folks, I had pretty much ruled out the Tampa/SP area due to the drive. It is one of those places that you can't get to in less than 3.5 hours from here due to the lake. I am starting to wonder if I should reconsider something like Key Largo.

No offense, but which part of the Gulf coast did you think you could get to in less than 3.5 hours?

You might consider something down around Fort Myers or Naples which would be a little closer for you. Sanibel and Captiva are nice spots, but I wasn't impressed with anything I saw in terms of night life during the occasions I've been there.

Hell, pull your boat to Okeechobee and drive it across the lake to Fort Myers. That's a fun day trip.

Do yourself a favor and do what she wants to do. You said you have been to the keys many times but what about her? I think most people outside of Florida look at the keys as a very exotic place to visit.

I have been kicking that around but aside from KW the doors close at 9 on everything but the tiki bars. Part of the fun is finding something neither of us has done before.

I have a lead on something that looks promising south of Ft Meyers. If I dont go for that then I will go to plan B which will be leave the boat at home and do the US1 tour from South Beach to KW.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Nice thread mersiles.... Clean and fresh

I highly recommend Marco Island. The club scene sucks, but thats OK for guys our age. The beach is fantastic. The resturants plethoric (i just made that word up.. do you like it?) The 10,000 islands start right here.

Hit my link below to email me from my site and I can hook you up proper with friends that own WF condos with dockage.

Plus if Im around I can feed you some numbers or show you around a little. There is some upscale stuff sure to keep the Mrs Happy.

PS< does she like to baby sit while we go fishing?

Second choice would be Sarasota, Longboat Key.

Thanks Baitkiller,

Once I get the plans formalized a little more I will check your link out for the condos. I doubt I will be fishing, more cruising than anything since she has never really boated before. The funny part was over the summer I would go up and visit her and we would go to "The Shore". I froze my ass off in early June . I am sure this will be a shock to her so taking it easy is a must.

Not only that, I am a little concerned that she would love Florida and fishing then want to move here.

Thats cool. Lots of miles of cruising between here, goodland and Naples. All protected. If it works out Ill set some routes up for you to ease the confusion. Markers reverse under bridges and so on. It can get a little weird.

I was going to suggest Pine island if you like a slow pace, but no beaches on the island. Palm island you take a ferry to get out but great beaches. If youve never been check out Boca Grande on Gasparilla island.

Siesta Key. It is approximately 3.5 hours from Hobe Sound. There is a lot to do and see. There are clubs that stay open after 9:00 in Sarasota County.
