Default Are DIRECT TV black boxes Steal-proof??

Our condo COA switched to a cable service provider that's installing Direct TV. They are installing black boxes at every TV along with a controller.

As an investor that rents my condo to the public, I have several concerns:

1. Having more than one controller creates 4x the headaches of learning how they work; especially with short-term guests.

2. Direct TV doesn't have code for all manufacturers, so being able to use just one remote on every TV isn't possible.

3. Theft by guests is a fact of life. If a guest happens to slip the black box and controller into their suitcase, can they use that box when they get back home?

They cant use the box as each box has a card in it that is tied to each account. I gues they could take the box and put their own card in it but that would be pointless. The boxes are basically free anyway.
They can steal the controller and it will work with any Direct TV box. Thats pretty much the same with any provider though.

People steal stuff just because they can, especially if it is a quick and easy operation.

Is there something you can bolt it to? This would deter almost everyone.

I agree with you that if it's there and costs something/does something, there are people that will rip it off. Using the excuse that, " ...the condo costs alot anyway, so the owner won't miss something this small".

What I expect is that these will get stolen and then thrown away when it's learned that they won't work. The controllers are going to be a real problem, considering that they are very common.

No, no viable way to bolt them to the cabinet or the TV. Maybe spray paint them pink or something that would make them less desirable?

Anybody have suggestions about the best way to protect these things?

Anybody own a rental condo that uses the black boxes?

Yes, we have two in a unit at Sanibel. They aren't secured. They are on the cable system, but still a generic "black box". No theft (yet). If one is stolen, just call DTV and they will kill the card in it.

Like I always have said, there is a lot more to being a landlord than just collecting a rent check every month. Good luck with your investment.

Steve, they will kill the card in the unit...but by then it's away from the condo and the condo needs to replace it. Do you know the charge for one of those boxes or controllers? With 5 TVs in the condo, there are 15 different controllers... hence the concern.

I think if its not called in then they could hook up the box and call Direct TV and if its not reported as stolen they will activate the box for the customer at a charge. Thats just a guess but my sister gave me her two boxes when they switched and when I called direct Tv for them to activate the box they did so without question. I figure if it was reported stolen then they would know by the card and not activate the box.

...which brings us to the question of how to call in a stolen/missing box or controller. It would need to have an ID of sorts...and if its on that card, and if there are 450 boxes in the condo complex... does the installing company keep track of the numbers?

Seeing the guys hooking up the boxes suggests that they could easily transpose numbers.... dang, anybody know for sure?
