Watch this movie just about everytime it is on tv and really like it.
I was thinking back I can barely recall when it happened, I was in elementary school, but it amazes me and how the guys at Mission Control in Houston got those pilots back alive. In this world of technonolgy it amazes me to watch them pull out their slide rules and do their calculations.
These guys are real American Heros
I saw a show on the biography channel a while back and it had the real Gene Krantz(played by Ed Harris) and it amazed me at how well Harris portrayed him.
Couple of my favorite quotes from the movie are "Failure is not an option" and "I beg your pardon sir but I believe this could be our finest hour"
Anyone here a little older than I that remembers this event

I saw it way back when ... Good movie but I just have a problem with Tom Hanks as an actor. I wish anyone else could have been cast in the part. Well, anyone except Tom Cruise -- maybe it's just actors named "Tom".
Recently watch 'The Godfather', again. Man, what a movie!!! I don't think Hollywood could make a movie like that today.
I remember it. As a kid i was fascinated with all of the moon shots. They always instilled a great sense of national pride. That was the greatest accomplishment in human history to date, and we, as a nation, pulled if off. It was nothing short of a miracle that the Apollo 13 astronauts made it back alive.

+1 all the way. I was 13 at the time and obsessed with the space program.
TRUE!!! The modern day equivalent is supposed to be the new Ares 1, which is going to take 10 years of development before manned flight. The Saturn V was developed in less than half the time without all of the modern day technology. It just amazes me that we can spend more time going to the moon a second time than we did the first time. It is proof that we have really screwed this country up.

I remember it very vividly.......First It was not just "the guys in Houston".....people always think of Cape Canaveral (launch) and Houston (mission control) because that is what you see on TV but they are tiny facilities by comparison and the biggest NASA facility and where the engineering is done is Marhall Space Flight Center on Redstone Arsenal Huntsville, AL. Back then they use to test all the rockets at Marshall but most of that has been moved to Stennis SFC in MS.
My Dad was a Branch Chief at Marshall and pretty much the whole those guys were up there he was at work. He came home just a couple of times and would change clothes, shower, eat and maybe a take couple hour nap and back to work. The rest of the time he and all the hundreds of engineers at Marshall were going over and over all the calculations. We were watching the news at school in the class roomand that was all people were talking about. But people in Huntsville were a little more connected to the whole deal and everybody was completely engrossed in the situation the whole time.
Since my dad worked for NASA we could always get launch tickets....I got to see the launches for Apollo 7,10,11,13 and 17...
I was 4 months into my tour in Nam when it happened, I can still remember listening to the reports sitting by a radio under a tarp hut...
Two years ago I did the tour at NASA, all I can say if you can find a day when you're in Florida DO IT, it was really great, especially if you were around for the Apollo missions. My favorite hat is a souvenir from my visit "Failure is not an option"
It's a conspiracy, man! It was all done in a studio!
Couldn't help myself. I also was on my tour of Se Asia when it happened. I didn't get too much news about it except that it was happening. No, wait. That was the first moon landing in 69. I can't remember much from then. Not a good time.
Anyway, I went to NASA near Houston a few years ago along with my wife's students on a field trip. The tour and activities for the kids are very educational and entertaining. We had a blast.

NASA Kennedy Space Center Merritt Island is hardly tiny. It has about 30 miles of beach and is about 300 sq miles in area.
KSC currently has about 12,000 employees although that will drop when the Shuttle program is shut down next year.

Any idea how many employees are going to be let go when the Shuttle Program wraps up? I fear that it is going to wreak havoc on the economy of the Space Coast during already difficult times.
Also the boys at Grumman are not shown in a very favorable light in the movie and I happen to know the lights never went off at the Bethpage Plant as they
were working day and night trying to figure out how to get more out of their LEM.

On the tour, they have the actual 'Mission Control' room (moved from Houston or duplicated).. They darken the room and play a recording from the mission (one we all heard in the movie) and a spotlight comes on over the chair of whom is speaking... What I found interesting was draped on every chair, a lab jacket with a large patch with the company logo of the company whom that individual obviously worked for. There was some real collaboration of Americas best talent put into those missions and gathered in that room...

Local reports say about 7,000 layoffs next year at KSC.

That is a great post. Really. It does show how this country is now a days.

Are we "screwed up"? Maybe. But keep in mind the amount of money and resources we devoted to the Apollo program. This country can accomplish great things when we are truly focused and united. WWII - same thing. Never underestimate American ingenuity and willpower.

This kind of thing is going to just keep happening to this country I'm afraid, whatever billions the government saves, it will get spent on another band aid... We're robbing Peter to pay Paul already.
SEVEN THOUSAND layoffs... Scary

I would never doubt the American ingenuity and willpower that put men on the moon and won 2 world wars. I'm just not really sure that the determination and drive that made the US the most powerful country in the history of this planet still exists.
