Default Sony Bravia LCD

I bought a 120hz 52" from H H Gregg about six weeks ago, and it's already gone out!

Luckily, they have an in-home repair service company... in Atlanta, GA!

Seriously, I went to turn it on this morning, and it just sat and looked at me. The Sony logo lights up, the green power light comes on, but nothing comes on the screen. I tried playing the DVD through it, and that didn't work either. Anybody have or hear of this same problem?

I had the same thing happen on a Maxent 58" purchased from Costco-it was about 9 months old at the time. It turned out to be the power supply panel. Maxent didn't have in-home repair at all, so it cost me shipping to Ca. I was not happy.

Check all your cables. Its not unheard of. My Sharp 46 LCD went in 11 weeks, the transformer took a dump. No sounds, smoke or anything. Their won't be any "In Home Repair". The guy will come out, spend two minutes looking at it and say you need a new one.

You might check and see if your control panel will display. There is a setting on my 52" Sony LCD where I can turn off the screen and only allow audio to be played. If you can not access (see) the control panel then there is a problem.

Nope. I'm the one who turned it off last night and then tried to turn it back on this morning. Absolutely NOTHING displays on the screen regardless of any button I press on the remote.

The outfit in Georgia returned my call but wouldn't schedule an appointment until I provided a copy of my sales invoice, the model number, and the serial number for the TV. I questioned how it could be in this day and time that they wouldn't be hooked into H H Gregg's computer for such info. After calling the store where I bought this thing on 10/12, it turns out they don't record serial numbers!

Now I have to get all this crap when I get home tonight and hope I can still get their first available appointment which is Monday of next week. Say what you will about Walmart, but if I had bought this thing from them, they would have taken it back and given me another one. I am NOT a happy camper.

IF you purchased the TV with a credit card THEN simply dispute the charge. I believe you have 90 days to dispute a purchase made with a credit card. It's amazing how people respond when they either don't get paid or receive a chargeback from the CC company. If you made the purchase with AMEX you will have an easy fix as they offer purchase protection as well double the manufactures warranty up to one year.

It is 60-days from the time you receive the bill with the charge on it. Just be to sure, many folks dispute within 60-days of the purchase. But I like the way you are thinking.

The 90 day deal (longer actually) would work if this were an Internet/mail order transaction. Other than that, you have to abide by the merchant's return policies when there is a magnetic read and signature.

Good news is, I found out what the problem was and won't need any service. I pulled the TV out and was snapping a shot of the serial number when I decided to play with the power plug going into the back of it. It was snug, but I unplugged it and plugged it back in. When I did that, I heard a "click", and the thing came on.

Why it was getting enough power to turn on the indicators and not enough to actually start it up is beyond me. The set hasn't been moved since I installed it, but there was obviously a problem with the connection. Oh yeah, I also noticed a "Made In Mexico" label on the back of the TV. Ah for the good old days of things being made in Japan.

NIce fix.

I have a SONY LCD and I'm happy with it. I have had to reconnect the HDMI cable a few times.

I have NOT experienced ANY issue with my CC company regardless of where or how the trade took place. I once had a similar issue and the card was magnetically swiped and I did sign the credit card invoice. The CC company stood with me. Merchant was compelled to perform. Just because a merchant states something does NOT mean in real life it is legal. There exists state laws and consumer protection. This is like paying to park your car and the signs posted all over the place state park at your own risk and not responsible for loss or damage. This is BS. If you pay (consideration) to park there is a legal assumption that the lot is take reasonable care of your vehicle. They can post whatever they like and makes them feel better but once they accept money they have also accepted liability. Now if you park for free (no consideration) then you accept the liability.

Some credit card companies other than AMEX appear to not stand with a cardholder in many circumstances involving a dispute. In such a circumstance their card gets trashed. This is why I trial a card firstly by using it for minor purchases and seeing how the company manages a dispute which seems almost inevitable these days. It is usually something minor or an oversight by a merchant but one can quickly determine if the CC is worth a damn or not for the card holder. All you have to do to trial a card is call a merchant with even a bogus dispute for a valid charge just to see how they handle you. You can easily decline the dispute but in the process you learn if they are cooperative with you or not. If so great. If not, buh-bye!

I based my comments on having been a merchant for 30 years who accepts credit cards. Simply using a credit card to make a purchase does not allow you re-write the policies of a merchant UNLESS the card isn't present. Obviously, in your case, if you hadn't signed anything, you had leverage. Not disputing you, but it's hard to imagine a merchant letting you walk out the door without having your signature on a voucher.

Had this set in fact required service, it would have been covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Outside that, I would have been on my own despite the fact I did purchase this with a credit card. There was no dispute that this would have been covered under warranty, it was just going to be a matter of inconvenience.

I did not state that I did not sign the CC invoice. What I stated was:

I understand you have been a merchant who has accepted CC for years. I can only tell you about my experience(s). There are laws that supersede what a merchant states in a disclaimer. Many merchants do NOT want to accept AMEX in particular because they stand with the customer in most dispute cases as told to me by merchants who accept CC's. AMEX also costs the merchant more however I am sure you know this. AMEX has not given me any issue with a dispute. Disputes of course should be valid and not just BS. In your case a dispute would have been valid if the TV failed to function and you were NOT getting support. Furthermore, the place you bought the TV from reads to be a BS seller if they could NOT look your purchase up in their system. Seems a bit shady on their part to me. I am also a SOB with issues like this and I write language on invoices and contracts all the time stipulating my terms. Honest folks have not had issue with the execution of a sale.

I got one,it's 3 years old and the only problem was after intial 5 hours of use the same thing happened. I un-plugged it and it reset itself. A couple of weeks later Sony sent me a memory stick to correct a program error in it's system. I haven't had a problem since.

Good thing you fixed the issue and the service man didn't come out to find that as the "problem". Enjoy your TV! I have a Sony Bravia and I am quite happy with it.
