For a good little while, more than a year, the Admiral is getting several magazines that she did not subscribe to(US Weekly-one of those hollywood magazines, and several other womens magazines). She has not subscribed to them or completed anything online and to date we have never seen any type of bill.
I use to subscribe to a lot of outdoors magazines but really cut most of them out due to never reading them but I always got a bill and of course paid it.
Any idea where these come from, I looked at one that came today and it shows an expiration date of March 2011.
Most of them go straight to the trash

I don't know about down your way, but up here when I'm at a boating show, sportsman show, fishing show or any other type of show there is lots of booths that offer this that and the other thing for free if you just fill out the free draw.....maybe those rags come via some sort of draw you or your wife filled out? I think it's this Feb when my Ducks Unlimited runs out.....it's been free for the past (I thinks it's been) two years.

I have been getting most of the major boating mags the last five or six years for free after filling out some forms at the New York city boating show one time. Every now and then they threaten to stop the subscription if I don't pay up. I don't pay and still continue to get most of em.
Outside for two years and they didn't even solicit a renewal.
nope other than those stupid little hard paper quarter page stapled in insert that makes it harder to thumb scroll/ flip through the mag. And those, the first thing I do when I get a new release, I open the issue up and rip all of those things out and throw them in the garbage ...then I enjoy reading the mag on the thrown.
They sell their advertisment based off viewership (sp) so when their subscriptions are down they send them out for free. She probably filled something out at some time or had to subscription to another mag that this company prints.
As someone who has advertised in national magazines, I look at "paid" subscriptions as part of the decision making process in where my ad dollars go. Complimentary copies mean very little. As a means to gain readership (and hopefully subscriptions) they may do as you suggest, but as far as getting advertising dollars in that wouldn't do much good.
I received Money for about a year. I never found out why, it just started showing up. I asked my parents if they subscribed for me as they give me a subscription for National Geographic for Christmas every years. They didn't. I checked my credit card statement every month thinking it may be some scam thing. Nothing there either.
They started sending renewal notices about 6 months in. My guess is they figured to let me take it for a "test drive", hoping to get me hooked. It didn't work.

Check you CC statement. Hollywood video (and the likes) make agreements with magazines to give new members a free trial of a mag. Many folks accept without understanding their CC will be charged for automatic recurring renewals.
I have about a dozen boat, motorcycle and car magazines that come to me every month. I rarelly get the time to sit down and read them so cancelled them all. When the bill for renewal came, I wrote on it, "Cancell Subscription" and returned it with no payment for the next year. I did it with all of my magazines well over a year ago. I still get most of them every month and still get bills for them every now and then. I write to cancell on the bills, photocopy it for my files and send them on their way. The mags just keep coming anyway. Maybe they figure I will feel bad if they keep sending them and will pay them something. None of them have my credit cards. I always paid them by check. Nothing has shown on any credit report as delinquent payments so if they choose to keep mailing their mags for free, they are welcome to do so.

For those that are not aware of it, fed law in the US allows you to cancel a magazine subscription at anytime and receive a full refund (pro-rated) for all unsend issues at the time of the cancellation.
I think the law, which has been in place for about 35 years(?), should be updated to include subscriptions to radio transmission services, e.g. sta tv, cell phones, etc. You should be able to cancel those at anytime without penalty, too.
I've been getting Power & Motor Yacht for about a year now. A little over a month ago I got a subscription notice in the mail.....not asking for money, though. All I had to do was sign it and return for another year free of charge. I studied it carefully for any small print, but there was none. It's good to see how the rich folks roll.....some nice boat porn in that mag.
