Default swelling in my hand?

Has anyone else had swelling in their hand after a day of rough water and bottom fishing? Both hands were stiff this morning but my right hand was swollen and it tingles when I make a fist. Starting to get light red in a few places to. Got the usual small cuts and nicks from handling baitfish but have never had my hand swell, its only moderate but still a first. Don't have any allergies that I know of and had to go for a swim to fix the transducer yesterday. I'm not old so it cant be heart issues; 20.

Any input?

Ice it to get the swelling down and see if it returns. If it returns you may be in for an ER visit and some cortisone.

Not to be an alarmist, but please be aware there is a worst case scenario

Where are you located?

Simple fishing incident....

As GhostShip posted... I had an aquaintance whose daughter cut her hand and in the course of about 3 hours got to the ER and if the medicine would not work they were talking about cutting off her arm (seriously). She had a dark red line working its way up her arm quickly!!! Dont mess with anything swollen and possibly infected from cuts... I care bleach and alcohol on the boat now to help kill that stuff if we get cut... Good Luck

There was a thread on here about three years back that I found in a search so that is why I am really trying to be on top of this. Was about a member who had a bad news infection in his hand.

I got that bacteria, after doing a swamp operation and they nearly had to chop off my leg. I was in the hospital for 3 days, now I have a hole in my lower leg.

Dude. Take your ass to the doctor. Ok. Got that out of the way. Because honestly my hardheaded ass wouldn't go to the doctor either.

Take a safety pin. Heat the tip. Take a big chug of corn liquor and POP that bad boy. Release the pressure my man.

Good Luck whatever you do....please check back in and let us know how it worked out.

UPDATE: Went to the ER last night and they gave me a prescription for a strong antibiotic, CIPRO? They said it looked infected and called it cellulitis? Anyway, the swelling has gone down but my hand is still discolored, had the prescription filled last night (good thing for 24hr pharmacies). Thanks to everyone who replied and pushed me to go get it checked out, after reading how fast this stuff can spread it was definately the right choice.

Great!! Sometimes they will take a magic marker and trace the outline to see if it gets bigger. make sure you keep an eye on it and go back in you you have any changes.

Good As cracker stated a lot of fishermen are carrying bleach and alcohol on board to treat the scratches immediately as more people here of this. Keep us posted.

Again, where did this happen?

That Cipro stuff is some powerful shit. It should knock out the infection. Just be sure to take the entire treatment even if your symptoms go away. I think the last time I was on that it was a horse pill a day for like 14 days. Felt better after 5, but had to take the damn stuff for 9 more. Glad i did, felt great when all was done.

Happened offshore of clearwater, FL. Went about 30 miles out of Johns pass and back, for those who know the area.

it is not an allergic reaction. what you encounter with the swelling hands is a common issue. it is caused by the bacteria from the baitfish spines (pinfish in our area) when they prick your hands/fingers.

they way you prevent the subsequent hand swelling and redness is to rinse or soak your hands briefly in a mild mix of bleach and water as soon as you are done fishing and headed back to the dock. problem eliminated.

I wish we could have caught some pinfish saturday, couldn't find bait to save our lives. I have been pricked and poked before, this took it to a different level.
