We can use the 45-70 as a primitive weapon in La now. I purchased a H&R model and have it sighted in at 2" high at 50 yards. Anyone have an idea on where this may be at 100 yards? Can't get to a range over 50 at this time.

Hmm, +3 at 100 yards is -4.1 at 200 yards. You should be right in the ballpark.

It's funny watching that big hunk of lead travel downrange. I don't have any ballistics on it.
I did cut the stock and add a recoil pad on a friends gun.

I've never been a racist. I don't like the white half either.

http://www.handgunsmag.com/ballistics/45_70_cowboy.html http://www.cpcartridge.com/45-70marlin-B.htmOne more this will be more applicable to what your looking for. Scroll to the bottom, it shows a zero at 50yds with -1.4" at 100yds for a 300gr bullet. So depending on what grain bullet your shooting, with +2" @50 you'll be +1/2" @100yds. I think that will do fairly well, and if your shooting a heavier grain you'll be right on.
You would LOVE MY HANDLOADS, they will rock your world
Just squeeze off 5 rounds in my Casul and not much else bothers ya .
But yeah, the 45-70 can be loaded up up perty dang hot and that turns it into a , EARGABUSTINGLOUDANDBOOMEN , gun.

I've got a brand new marlin 1895 in 45-70 if you guys know anyone that wants one. Blued, 22" bbl. Straight 1895, not the guide gun or stainless. $450 +shipping to an ffl.
With mine 2.5" high at 50 you can aim on fur to roughly to 200....then it drops like a cinder block. In my Thompson with a 20" barrel 350gr loads will be 2.5" high at 50 if zeroed at 100. It drops roughly 7 inches from 100-200. These are Hornady jacketed loads so a lighter pointed bullet may be slightly better.
Dropped it 10 clicks before I shot it at 100 yards on the recommendation of a friend. 1st shot 1/2" high, 2nd shot touching the bullseye. Left it alone didnt shoot anymore.
Years ago when I shot alot, seem to recall that a rifle sighted in at 25 feet was also good at 100 yards. Good for dialing in a new scope in limited area. Is my memory fried or is that a decent rule of thumb?
