Subject: California State Tax Increase
Dear Employee,
Effective November 1, 2009, you may notice a change to the state income
tax withholding in your paycheck. Due to the recently signed
legislation, the California State tax withholding rates will reflect a
10 percent increase until the end of the calendar year.
In accordance with the passage of Assembly Bill x4_17, California has
issued modified tax withholding schedules that will be in effect
November 1, 2009 – December 31, 2009. Under these modified schedules,
employees will see an increase in the amount of state income taxes being
withheld from their paychecks.
This means that the amount withheld from your paycheck for state income
tax will be 10 percent greater than it is now for a two-month period.
For example, if you currently have $20.00 withheld, you will now have
$22.00 withheld from your November and December paychecks.
Although California does not consider this a tax increase, they merely
refer to it as accelerated tax payments. The increase is a way for
California to accelerate revenue to the state.
The modified schedules can be downloaded from the California Employment
Development Departments website at:

In addition, the state supplemental tax withholding rate will increase
to 6.6%, up from 6%.
