Default need help "burning" a DVD

I finally took some old video footage I had of some tuna chunking action off of Montauk from August 1987 in to a photo store to have it transferred to DVD.

Now I have the DVD and I am trying to burn copies on my home PC. I have Roxio Creator on my PC and on my laptop. I follow the directions to "Copy Disc" I follow the prompts and it tells me to insert the disc and it will copy it to a temporary file on my hard drive. The progress bar comes up and it completes in about 10 minutes.

At that time the drive door opens and a window pops up telling me to insert a blank DVD-R. I do so and hit "OK" A few seconds go by, with some whirring and clicking and then the drive pops open again with the same message to insert a blank DVD-R.

I can not get seem to get beyond this step. It keeps opening and asking me to insert a blank DVD-R. I thought that the blank disc was bad and tried another - same thing.

I then fired up the laptop and tried that and get stuck at the same point, it keeps popping open and askin me to insert blank disc, I do and it just keeps happening.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT I AM DOING WRONG? THIS IS DRIVING ME MAD!

The disc I received from the store has the same specs as the blanks I am trying to use:
DVD-R, 4.7 GB, up to 16x, 120 min

Q.1. Are you sure you have a DVD burner and not just a CD burner?

Default Is it blank?

Could the disk have already been written to, or have an aborted write so not blank?

First step I'd try to see that the burner will write to that brand of DVD-R.

On older machines, I've had some issues with the brand of DVD, write speed, and so on.

Try just putting the disk in and see if it allows you to write files to it.

Sorry I can't help more... just keep trying different things, programs, HW.

Definitely a burner. Its ates: "LightScribe DVD+- Writer/CD Writer
definitely a blank
out of a brand new package - and when I insert it, the "Auto Play" asks what it should do with a Blank DVD's.
The windows that pops up asking to insert the blank DVD states that the drive is compatible with DVD-R, it is a fairly high end-end, computer and when I was reviewing the help topics, it seems like it can even handle blue-ray discs (which this is not)

I tried saving the disc to the hard drive - which it appears to have done successfully, but when I try to "burn" off the hard drive, the same thing happens - it keeps asking me to insert a blank. I have tried putting the blank disc in the following ways:
the drive pops open, I get the message, take out the orig, put in the blank, close it wait for the whirring and clicking to stop, hit "OK" the whirring and clicking starts and then it the "insert blank disc" window pops up again and the bay opens.
Or
put the blank in the pay - then press ok - the drive closes, makes the noises and then again the window pops up and the drive opens.

Could this be some kind of "copy guard"? I asked the store that did the transfer if it would be copy protected and they said, that I would have no trouble making copies

Honestly, if you are going to do this on an ongong basis go ahead and buy Pinnacle Studio Plus. It will cost you around $50 and you will be absolutely amazed at what you can do with it - creating and burning DVDs and other video modes.

Thanks - but this is my entire video collection. This is just driving me nuts - I am following all of the steps - this should work - it is not rocket science! - I though I was pretty good with technology - this is making me feel "old"

Did they "protect" the DVD you had made from the store?

I asked them that when I brought them the video tape - they said no, but I am thinking the same thing

dvd's come in a -r and a +r format. One of my burners will only do +r even though it is rated for -r also.

Also if it is copyright protected the Roxio copier would tell you that it is protected.

I used Roxio and Nero.

I have Roxio Creator DE, but I have never copied a DVD.

Here is there support page.
http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/

Burning errors can happen for a variety of reasons. Roxio has found that doing the following steps resolves about 80% of all burning issues. Please give all these steps a try and see if it fixes your writing problems.
  1. Update your drive's firmware/drivers. Most companies regularly update their firmware and drivers. If you are unsure what model your burner is and its firmware, click here to find out.
  2. Enable DMA. Direct Memory Access enables better efficiency of data. For more info, check how to enable DMA.
  3. Your media. Check the following:
    • The disc is clean and unused.
    • The media is recommended by your burner's manufacturer or try a different brand, preferably a name brand, if you continue to have problems.
    • Make sure that media (-R/+R, -/+RW, dual-layer compatibility) is supported by the burner by checking burner's manual or manufacturer's website. This is especially true for some Blu-Ray burners which do not support CD-R/RW media.
  4. Lower the write speed of your burner.
  5. If your burner is external, make sure it is connected directly to the computer via USB/Firewire and not a hub or other other device like a sound card.
  6. Update to the latest PX Engine. The PX Engine improves compatibility with newer burners on the market.
  7. A reinstall of the burner's drivers may also help.
    • Windows XP: Go to My Computer and choose Properties.
    • Windows Vista: Go to Start --> Control Panel --> System and Maintenance --> Device Manager.
    • Click on the Hardware tab.
    • Select Device Manager
    • Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives, then select your burner and uninstall it by right -licking on it.
    • Reboot.

Instead of copying the disc. Try this: Open Roxio/select data/drag the TS files and all the others to the area where you drag/drop files. When all the files from your disc are there select burn. Make sure you select 4x speed or lower. It may take longer, but the buffer over run won't be maxed out.
What's happening trying to copy the disc is your cache is full. This is where the files are temp stored on your HD, which is probably getting close to full.

From his description the burner is not recognizing his blank. I've seen this at least a few dozen times on various computers.
I wouldn't try the firmware update if available, unless you know what you are doing. If it isn't updated correctly the first time you you have a junk burner. It's like an improper bios update, you will have a dead motherboard.

But new burners are around $25 from Newegg. The prices have really come down over the last year or 2.

Still can't get it to work.

I don't think that the cache is full - and certianly my HD is not anywhere near full, I have 262 gb free - just under 3/4 of the drive's capacity.

I think - just a WAG (wild assed guess) that is as Maxx states - that the burner is not recognizing the blank. why - I have no idea. the only problem with that theory is that I am having the exact same results with my desktop and my laptop - What are the chances of 2 drives not recognizing the blank?

At this point, the issue is not so much making copies - as I can bring the DVD into work and let one of the IT guys make me some copies - it is the not knowing what is wrong that is driving me bonkers

Default FIXED! - actually nothing was wrong

Well after trying anything and everything - this became an all consuming, drive me crazy issue.

tried again, everything seemed to work fine while copying the source disc - as it has on every other attempt.

received the message to insert a blank DVD-R into the drive. that same window goes on to state the following: Supported media, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, DVD RAM.

For the first time I realize that it says, insert a blank DVD-R. Which is what I was using

The package that is came in says DVD-R, 4.7 GB, up to 16X, 120 minutes, but then I look at the actual disc and it says DVD+R, recordable, 16X, 4.7 GB 120 min, RW

the package of 25 was actually DVD+R though the packaging says DVD-R!

Well, a trip to Office Depot and a purchase of a new batch of discs, DVD-R and problem solved.

This would only happen to me - a package of mis-labeled discs!

Glad you got it figured out -- and thanks for the entertainment.
