Default getting older, need glasses

Can anybody help, I am looking to know who makes the best eyeglass frames.

I have been told by the place that gave me the exam, that IC Berlin are one of the best, indestructible frames.

My sister works for some place called Marchon and can get me any frame they sell for 50% off, Fendi or Flexon or about 20 other brands, but they don't deal with IC. I guess it would be good to find out other names because it is costing me $1100 for the IC's with transition and progression lenses.

I also ordered 2 - sets of Maui Jim with the same progression lenses, bummer is they were $700 per set.

As the order wasn't processed yet I can still cancel or change.

Thanks, Mike

Eyeglasses are a fashion accessory ..., er, I mean necessity. The "best" frames are the ones you like and fit your needs. Don't get hung up on who makes them, consider style, function, and if you are comfortable with the quality/price. Personally, I have 3 pairs of sunglasses and 3 pairs of Rx glasses.

Something you may encounter is that it takes an experienced person to fix progressive lenses correctly. Because of the way they are made, the same RX may not work well in a progressive lens for driving, but will for reading and working on a computer. Diff manfrs of progressive lenses make them differently -- diff size zones to better accommodate a diff function, either reading or computer or driving. Seldom does a single progressive lens work well for all three functions. Consider a separate pair of glasses for reading and computer work, and maybe another frame for computer and driving.

Fwiw, $700 for Rx sunglasses is well beyond what I am willing to pay, but if you are comfortable with it ...

Thank you eyeball, I go through a pair every 3-4 weeks (breaking, losing or someone stealing them) of my regular sunglasses which are only Revo, now I switched to Maui Jim because there easier to get.

I was down to my last set of Revo's that I purchased from a fellow THT'er, So I got 3 sets of Maui Jim regular sun glasses today. I am a Crane operator and the best glasses are a must ( it seems like my signal guys always want to stand in the sun on the 10-15th floor).

These other prescription glasses are not always going to be worn, or maybe they will be, thats why I got the Maui Jim prescription as well.

What---Wait----Gulp----- Yep---- I read it again----YIKES!!!!!!!!!

$700 X 2 = $1400

$1100 + $1400 = $2500

Dang man for glasses?

$2500 will pay for every pair of glasses I have ever had, with money left over.

I wear glasses too, $115 for my clears, bifocal safety glass.
$150 for polarized bifocal sunshaded safety lenses. I tried the progressive thing, not for me. I like the lines, lets me know where the bifocal is.

Uhhh? I hate to ask, if you are in construction (crane operator) are you required to wear safety lenses w/side shields? If so the company will pay a portion of your eye glass cost. Progressive lenses are not the end all be all, some folks, like me can't get used to'em. On my job, industrial, even the clerical staff in the offices are required to wear safety glasses while on the job, but are not required to wear side shields unless out in the production unit.

And them glasses that you go through a pair every 3 weeks, how much are them things?

You can have corrective surgery for about $7k an eye. That ain't but a few pair of them out of this world galsses.

1100 for a pair of glasses is absurd. The only reason to pay that is if you have $ to burn and are into the "status" angle of it.

I have been wearing glasses since I have been in high school. I get very "stylish" frames with transition lenses. A very nice set costs about $300.00. I do not care about the brand - other than they fit comfortably and look good.

My wife wanted get a designed brand that was 800.00 for the frames - I said not in this lifetime.

Oh - transitions are not that great as sun glasses. I have a set of custom prescription polarized that I bought for the boat and when I know I will be out of doors. The transitions are for my everyday glasses, because I hate carrying around 2 sets of glasses. And even my daily wearers with the transitions, have a magnetic "clip on" sun glass that I carry in my shirt pocket

Thanks guy's. My regular sun glasses are about $179 each (maui jim), I don't have to just stop a glare, literally, I sometimes have to be looking directly into the sun all day long. No need for safety glasses.

I don't have an issue with the prescription Maui jims, with the progression lens being $700, but I don't want as Twentynine said, for me not to get used to them. With what I do for a living coupled with the fact I need reading glasses for close, and also glasses for distance, I was thinking I might be wearing the Maui jims all day while at work. I don't go to kmart for my work boots.

The IC Berlins were really for evenings and weekends around the house, but that I do have a problem with $1100 if I lost them. I can get the other name frames for a fraction of that through my sisters job, and was thinking as Makosteve said have great glasses for about $300-400. Just need to know of possible other indestructible frames as I am new to this.

And yes if there's away to break something I can figure it out!

Closer to $179 a month for sun glasses, just had my eyes checked for the first time in years yesterday, don't even know if I am a candidate for lasik, they did tell me I am a candidate for (glycomic?) though.

I'm a carpenter that sweats alot. I can tell if a frame will hold up, just by comparing them to other frames, and handling them. When your at the eye glass store, and all the makes and models are there, you'll see what I mean.
My last pair of work glasses, lasted me about three years. The frames outlasted two sets of new nose pads. The pair before those, went two years, before they stopped a nail from a teco nailer that missed the itty bitty hole in the plate. It made me a believer in some sort of eye protection, for those who don't wear glasses and are in the trades.
If you can't get more then a couple weeks out of a pair, then you need to stop sitting on them, using them for a doorstop, leaving them as a tip for the waitress, setting them on the car, throwing them against the wall when your mad...........

I have the photo gray with a glass lens(bifocal), to avoid the scratching that is an issue for me with plastic. I'm always wiping the sweat off that drips on the inside of the lens, when I'm looking down.
I wear them from the time I finish shaving in the morning, until I get in the shower at night. My wife is always taking hers off, and sit's on them, puts them where the dog can get them, leaves them on some counter in the house, and sets the mail on them........
I have the RX polarized sunglasses(bifocal) for the boat($500 and change for frames and lenses) with an idiot string to keep them from falling overboard. They have really nice looking frames, that fit close and prevent to much light from coming in the sides. Check where you by the glasses, most have a collection of good sports or attractive sunglass(like the Maui's etc.) style frames.

If your going to get prescription lenses, learn to wear your glasses. If you don't set them down, nobody will steal them, you won't sit on them....etc..

As has been mentioned, there are a lot of decent frames out there. They won't cost you an arm and a leg, unless you just want to brag about how much you paid for the last pair of glasses you misplaced.

If your spending more then $300 for the frames alone, chances are your paying for style and not necessarily quality. Find something you like, and evaluate whether you think they'll hold up.

See if you can find a place that'll sell you an insurance policy type thingie, that'll replace your glasses for free etc. for a period of time if something happens to them.

If I couldn't keep a $200 pair of glasses longer then a month, I'd have myself committed before I hurt myself, or somebody else.

I, a early retired IRON WORKER Local 433 LA, can tell ya one thing for sure ..............................GET SOME RADIOS ...................

Our local 12 boys out west had no probs with the ol' two way , plus you could BS all day with the operator between picks.

Up Up, Up, swing left , swing, down easy , down , it's like a dance and you don't even see you partner. Man I miss those Days.

I never thought about that Les. You could give a radio to your glasses, and if you ever misplaced them, you could always ask them where they are.

This is a good plan.

For your Glasses you would need a Spot Locator .

I personally don't want to use a Operator that tries to HELP me when I'm making a point [trying to bolt two pieces or Iron together] Fingers are lost that way.

I just as soon give the Operator sun glasses that are Painted black so he can't see anything out side of his cab.

A good Operator is worth his weight in GOLD to a raising Gang.

Good day hanging Iron is a 100 pieces a day [ 8 hour shift ] The best I have had as a Foreman is 121 pieces and in that 8 hour shift we took a 30 min. lunch and 1-15 Min. break.

Hubba Hubba , Green side up , one Bolt per Hole , Let's GO Hubba Hubba

I have bifocals with titanium frame. Go to a local eyes first Doc. My coyap was about 170.00 . Hard to hurt those frames and if they get bent , they readjust for free. Ins. company sent me a reminder that I am overdue for a new eye test. Will stick with the titanium for the new frames. As an aside I have Aetna insurance.

You know EXACTLY what I am talking about, yes I have cp200 Motorola radio's, but its when the connector is signaling me on the 14th floor that hurts (were the prescriptions will come in handy) and of course the sun.

With saying that, the crane gets setup with 6 - 6"x6"s x 6' under each (4) outrigger plus 4-3'x 6"x6" cross cribbing at the beginning and end of each day, this is when I clip my glasses over the top of my shirt (and they fall off, when leaning over to pick up the wood) or put down and forget and drive the crane away.

So leaning over 80 times a day x 24 days a month= 1920 possibilities a month for them to fall off. Yes I help the boy's set up the crane.

I have sat on a pair here or there, but thats not common.

He's a crane operator. Those guys are so overpaid -- he can afford paying twice that for a pair of sunglasses.

Blackfin - I'd interested on your comparison of the MJ lenses and the REVO lenses -- which do you like better after looking through them in bright sunlight for hours?

Have you tried the idiot strings? If they hang in the way, just spin em around on your back.
I used them for a few years, but when I bought a pair of glasses with a spring bow(the ones that went three years)......like the old time ray bans, I didn't need it, and got out of the habit.
They have alot more discrete strings, then the flashy dayglo yellow or green type.
Also, get one of the little visor bugs to hold your glasses in the cab or personal vehicle. It keeps em off the dash and or seat.

Will check back after a couple day's, been wearing revo's up until yesterday, weather is been holding up, no early day's. I needed to find a supplier that didn't have banker hours, thats why the switch. My research showed that maui jims were the only that could compare.

Well I guess my pay will go down now, daylight savings to thank, now I leave at 5am and thankfully am home nice and early by 7pm. Working those little hours can really hurt someone's bank account.

I tried that idiot string thing which resulted in my bluetooth falling out and breaking when I put the glasses on. The best thing was to leave a pair in the crane upper and lower, both work trucks, both boats.

My original post was not about the sunglasses but the IC Berlin for HOME use. And was hoping someone got the progression lenses Maui jim for less then $700, online the readers are only about $300.

But thanks for all the suggestions.
