Default Laptop is SLOOOOW

All of a sudden my trusty laptop is running very very slow.

I have the AVG anitvirus on it and also have downloaded the free antivirus from Microsoft.

I am running a wireless internet and nothing has changed.

I have done the clean disk deal, removed cookies and all that stuff

What other diagnosis or options do I have other than taking it to my trust computer guy

Running slow across the board or just when surfing the 'Net?

I had some type of update that just asked me to restart the computer and it seems to be a little better but not much.

I wouldn't run two "anti-virus" programs for starters.

CTL/ALT/DEL......what's running? (start task manager)

My provider (Bellsouth) has a tool on their home page for first checking upload and download speed versus speed you pay for and then a tool for optimizing. There are some funky settings like MTU package size that, if your update messed with them, would cause what you are seeing.

Routers usually correct MTU for you

I would use something like Registry Easy to check and fix registry issues. That can really slow your computer down to a crawl. But you have to be careful with registry, as you can screw things up, but R/E seems to take all that into account, and keeps everything that is needed. Also check and edit your startup menu. R/E will also do that, and allow you to removed things that got put in there without your knowledge or permission. (there are spyware programs that do things like that).

I bought R/E a couple weeks ago, and my laptop has never run better. I am using AVG Free, and once a week or so, I run a free program Super Anti-Spyware. It seems to find some things left behind by some of the others.

Once you get things running right, suggest you do a full system backup to a usb hard drive. I use the Toshiba (Sams Club $108) drive which allows a full system backup and restore, including booting from it, and it will also prompt you to make a set of bootable CD's.

How would registry issues affect only internet speed while everything else runs fine?

download and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It's a free and very trusted program that finds things updated the big guys like NAV & MacF sometimes miss. Just google it and you will see. Finds and cleans up registry errors as well.

Also, which version of IE are you running? Up to 8 yet? its good but you may want to try google chrome or safari, they work well.

Menzies, I don't know if it can. My laptop, a couple years old Toshiba WinXP was very slow on the internet, and yet it appeared to be ok on stuff like running MS S&T, opening up folders of photos and writing letters on Word, but maybe it was slower there too. It did take longer to boot up.

After I ran RE, it boots fast, and loads and runs programs fast. I am no expert on this stuff. Not even close. I struggle sometimes for hours, setting up a secure LAN, or wireless printer, when others do this stuff in minutes. I was simply making a suggestion for the OP to try, I may be a waste of his time, since the problem could even be something like his wireless router settings.

If you downloaded an internet bot it most certainly will.

Try: shut down pc, power off router and modem (if you have one), leave all off a minute, power on modem and wait for it to come up fully (usually have link or internet light or something similar), power on router and wait for that to come up, power on pc and re-connect.

Mine was slow at work and a co worker showed me how to clear everything out of prefetch.

It's found under Start, Run.

Did he tell me to do the right thing? Anyone else do that? Try it.

My RAM is only 488mb

Assuming you are running windows hit your windows key and the letter R at the same time, this brings up your run command. Type in msconfig, go to startup and see what programs your computer is running all the time. You could go into the system registry but if you don't know what you are doing, there is serious margin for error. Command for registry from the run box is regedit or regedit32.

Again, if the laptop is working fine while not surfing the 'net, how would this help?

install linux or switch to a mac. no more problems shall you have. I supply all my employees with mac's or linux laptops so I don't have to deal with crap like this. I'm a computer expert. I've written code for operating system kernels before and have an extremely strong understanding of OS design and function. MS is crap. Always has been, always will be. you can fix it for now, but windows is always in a state of degradation because of a piss poor design from the get go.

its impossible to tell for sure. various programs running can be doing various things with the network traffic which may slow it down. could very well be a virus or rootkit that is calling home when you're on the net, and its just a bandwidth hog.

Well, does anyone else delete everything in "prefetch" to help their speed? Or this a waste of time?
