Default Strut Spring Compressor

Does anyone have a suggestion for a strut spring compressor for home use? Not a super expensive wall mounted one.

Northern and Harbor Freight have them but they're different styles.

Thanks.

I get my struts compressed for $45.00 ea. If I had the room I'd throw a $700.00 wall mounted up and do them myself. The cheap strut compressors are nearly useless, take too much time and are EXTREMELY dangerous. Just take your new strut and old strut assy and have a local alignment shop put the new strut in the assy for you.

Most of your local auto parts stores have a loaner program were you give them a deposit on the tool then get it back when you return them.

Back in the day when I was turning a lot of wrench I just made my own out of plate steel w/ welded alignment knobs and threaded rod/ washers and nuts. As Ed cautioned, spring removal is very dangerous if things were to go wrong. You should be able to rent a spring compressor from your average rental shop.
But with R & R being only $45 ea, I’d say that’s a good deal.

I've been having them done at the shop too but I'd like to use it for my snowmobile and other stuff too.

Thanks for the responses.

I bought a kit years ago from Advance auto parts for about 15bucks. It's worked like a champ on many a BMW. I do, always wrap a tie down strap around everything....just in case.

I always used a very light duty chain...the kind you might use for hanging a light duty shelf. Personally I hate Opppps.

That's what my nephew did putting a lift kit into his front end on his truck.

Back in the old day we played with a Maxi brake can for a ten wheeler using a front end loader. NEVER AGAIN! That will kill someone when it takes off.

It happens at about 1:10 into the video. Unfortunately I've seen it in person more than once. Each time it happened it was the cheap spring compressor tools breaking at the hooks. Resulting in injury and damage to shop and vehicles.
