Random Quote: What kind of knot is that might Knot, Might hold Might Knot
It's not that bad, but I hate it. I've been running about 2.5 miles on a treadmill and doing about 50 sit-ups 4 to 5 days a week for about 6 weeks. I've dropped about 7 pounds (185 to 178... I'm 5'-10", 34 years old) Not too long ago, I had a 6 pack, now it's just flabby. I blame the wife, kids and beer. From the exercize, the belly just doesn't seem to be getting any smaller. Maybe it is, but i expected to see a little more dramatic loss.
Other than the belly, I'd like to have a little more bulk in my arms. I have a treadmill, a couple sets of dumbells (12, 15 & 20 lbs), a curnved barbell & a weight-bench. The bench holds a bar for a bench press & has an attachment for leg-lifts (or something like that).
So, looking for some advice on all you ripped boaters out there. Can anyone recommend a exercize routine? What i do right now takes me about an hour. I could go up to about 1:15, but that's it. I already get up at 4:30 to get done what I'm doing. My treadmill routine is a program on the treadmill that takes 40 minutes. So I'm looking to do 20 to 30 minutes of something else.
Find a routine that you can and will continue to do for the long haul. Results will be slower but you'll have an exercise pattern you can keep. I only do 30 minutes of weights 3 days a week and walk as hard as I can go for 30 minutes 3-4 days a week. Its not tough enough that I get burnt out but it keeps me in good shape....and the stress level down. 6 weeks and you dropped 7# is a great start but don't be expecting miracles in a short time. The turtle wins this race...not the rabbit that kills themselves with results and routines they cannot maintain. The other thing is diet....the more you work out the better you will eat. For your arms you are going to need a weight that you can curl 8-10 times to increase bulk....what you have will only tone and define. A reverse grip on a chin-up bar is a simple way to put bulk on your back and arms.
The first easy way to drop weight is to drop the beer. Beer has a ton of calories. I switched over to vodka and soda (club soda) because that has 0 calories. It worked wonders pretty quick.
Second, I am not sure you are getting your heart rate enough walking on the treadmill. 2.5 Miles in 40 minutes = 16 minute miles. I am by no means a runner but I usually shoot for 4 miles in 40 minutes.
Those 2 things alone helped me drop 15 pounds. I am about your same age and weight.
To bulk up muscles you need heavy weight and low reps. A peramid plan works well. That being sets of 8, 6, 4, 2 with increased weight every set.
Have your testosterone levels checked. Seriously, if they happen to be low it will reduce your body's ability to burn fat as well as efficiently build muscle. If you're in your 40's or later, it is a valid suspect.
I always figured the "low T" deal was just a marketing scheme, but mine was low (probably related to all the blood pressure meds, but maybe genetic). Tried the topical stuff and blood sugar dropped almost 100 points and I lost 8 lbs without any major diet changes.
If you're getting 40 minutes of exercise a day and aren't eating more, something should be happening to your weight.

It sucks getting older. This is just the start. Soon you will notice you can not go 3 times a night any more. Then as the hair starts to fall out the top of your head you will notice hair in places there were no hairs before. Then you will start to yell at kids walking on your grass and becoming obsessed with Bayliners and shooting heavers at jet skis. You will probably become a Republican and hate anyone who speaks with an accent.
In the meantime get Viagra and join the Hair Club for Men. Embrace your love handles and get a new wife/girlfriend.
Its all about the food. Calories in have to be less than calories out. The exercise you're doing is helping you to meet that goal, but it is not enough. You HAVE to count your calories, at least to start out, to help you get into the habit and pattern of learning how much you should be eating......everyone is different. Google "daily caloric intake calculator", run several different calculations from different ones, come up with a number, subtract 500 from that, and meet it everyday. The pounds have to come off if you do it right. Once you put it on paper, you'll be shocked at how diffucult it is to meet that daily caloric goal, that is why everyone has such trouble losing weight. Weigh yourself once every week or two (NOT EVERYDAY). I was in the same position as you, in good shape, exercising, just couldn't get those few stubborn pounds to go. Once I did the above, it happened. The key is being consistent over the long term. Good luck.
If you do what i've outlined here, and you still don't lose, refer to Tireless's post above.
For upper body I bought the ultimate pushup set on sale for about 20.00 bucks. If you follow the routine that comes with them they give great results in a short time. I have not tried but hear that the px90 is great also.

+1
Cutting out drinking soft drinks alone helped me lose 10 pounds right off the bat.
