As Joan Rivers once said, "I never saw a fat person walk out of a concentration camp". Like puggie said it is about caloric intake vs. calories burned.
Rowing machine and crunches. I've been trying to loose mine for about 6 months now. Its SLOWLY going away. Pisses me off because my wife's abb's are rock hard.

It sucks getting older. This is just the start. Soon you will notice you can not go 3 times a night any more. Then as the hair starts to fall out the top of your head you will notice hair in places there were no hairs before. Then you will start to yell at kids walking on your grass and becoming obsessed with Bayliners and shooting heavers at jet skis. You will probably become a Republican and hate anyone who speaks with an accent.
In the meantime get Viagra and join the Hair Club for Men. Embrace your love handles and get a new wife/girlfriend.

He's RIGHT, you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been working out in my old age (63) and have "built/bulked" myself back up to post-high school stats ... I can now bench press 60#'s (twice), have pumped up the biceps to 10+ inches (upper thighs to 14 inches!), wear 28 (petite) slacks, and reduced my shoe size from 8-1/2 to 6! I walk at least 150 feet/day (to the mailbox & ******, only stopping twice to rest. I went out and bought a nice jogging outfit, but burnt a hole in the jacket with a cigarette while power walking up to the service station to get a milkshake and chips.
Regards,

I've got 2 buddies that have lost weight recently, one a significant amount. One is a truck driver with a work schedule that has him away overnight some and coming home at midnight or 8am other times. In the past he would drink 3-4 beers when he got home from work (sometimes at 8am). When he got home at midnight it was the beer and a meal then straight to bed. He cut out the odd hour eating and drinking and now eats 3 meals a day at the standard times and only drinks on the weekends. He lost over 70# in 6 months doing this with no exercise at all.
My other buddy has lost 20 pounds over the last few months by counting calories. He is 5' 9" and started at 195# and is down to 175#. He limits himself to 2000 a day and uses his phone to log everything. Other than counting calories he has not changed his lifestyle (no additional exercise). He does play indoor soccer twice a week but did that when he was tubby also.

And the peanut gallery says to just eat smarter and KNOCK OFF THE JUNK FOOD and cut back on the beers! One doesn't need to be a calorie counter, one just needs to burn off more calories then one takes in. Dieting causes the body to go into preservation mode, it says hey there isn't enough food/ calories coming in, therefore I best store what I get......this makes if very hard to loose weight. Starving and missing meals also causes the body to go into preservation mode. Eat well balanced meals and get the plumbing system working properly!

On our local talk radio station this was a topic and one caller said he ost 20 lbs just by cutting his grass with his push mower, no other changes. I would say this was < 1 acre.
It does not matter what you do, just be consistent, cut back on the calories and don't eat past 7 pm.
Dr. Dean Adell says it does not matter what you eat but it has to be a variety and cut back on the amount, stop BEFORE you feel full.
Its all about the food. Calories in have to be less than calories out. The exercise you're doing is helping you to meet that goal, but it is not enough. You HAVE to count your calories, at least to start out, to help you get into the habit and pattern of learning how much you should be eating......everyone is different. Google "daily caloric intake calculator", run several different calculations from different ones, come up with a number, subtract 500 from that, and meet it everyday. The pounds have to come off if you do it right. Once you put it on paper, you'll be shocked at how diffucult it is to meet that daily caloric goal, that is why everyone has such trouble losing weight. Weigh yourself once every week or two (NOT EVERYDAY). I was in the same position as you, in good shape, exercising, just couldn't get those few stubborn pounds to go. Once I did the above, it happened. The key is being consistent over the long term. Good luck.
If you do what i've outlined here, and you still don't lose, refer to Tireless's post above.
Pug has it. It is all about calories. Also When you walk on the tread mill incline it, walking up hill burns almost 50% more calories, then walking on a normal plane.
Also get heavier dumbells. Building muscle will help burn calories, and you will continue to burn some during the recovery process. Beer has empty calories, meaning the body will not use them, they go right away to fat.
That is why I have a beer belly!
Cutting out drinking soft drinks alone helped me lose 10 pounds right off the bat.
Same here, the first thing I did was stop drinking calories.....soft drinks, tea, juice. I know the diet drinks aren't much better for you, but really help you cut calories. Once I started drinking them I got used to them and I really don't much like the sugary drinks. Diet coke is disgusting, but the mountain dew is pretty good.
Here's a diet coke tip: if you get a diet coke from the fountain, fill it to about an inch from the top, then top it off with regular coke........improves the taste big time!

Ditto on the muscle building......not only does it help you burn extra calories, but when you hit your thirties, muscle will automatically start diminishing if you don't work to maintain it
.
For the record, a shot of any 80 proof liquor is 100 calories. Less than a beer yes but still not guilt free. As for the weight loss get on a decent diet. All the exercise does nothing without proper nutrition to back it up. Lower your carb intake, pasta, rice, etc. nothing too severe mind you and raise your lean protein intake, chicken, pork.
A great resource would be to visit bodybuilding.com check out the site you can searce for workout/weight loss programs and they have a large forum as well.
You just cant possibly burn aff all you want to eat or drink - have t rduce intake
Vodka is not calorie free as stated above - ethanol is indeed a food to the human body - Alcohol is dense in energy and contains 7 calories per gram, compare it to fat at 9 calories per gram
Calories in Vodka: Sources show one ounce or shot of Vodka has 64 calories. Favored vodkas have around 69 calories per ounce adding 5 calories per ounce of vodka. Most drinks start with a jigger of distilled spirits. Distilled spirits include vodka, gin, rum, tequila, scotch, whiskey and more. A jigger measures 1.5 ounces and has around 96 calories as 1 gram of alcohol has 7 calories.
So its better than beer but still has 100 + calories for the way most people drink it.

The first easy way to drop weight is to drop the beer. Beer has a ton of calories. I switched over to vodka and soda (club soda) because that has 0 calories. It worked wonders pretty quick.
Second, I am not sure you are getting your heart rate enough walking on the treadmill. 2.5 Miles in 40 minutes = 16 minute miles. I am by no means a runner but I usually shoot for 4 miles in 40 minutes.
Those 2 things alone helped me drop 15 pounds. I am about your same age and weight.
To bulk up muscles you need heavy weight and low reps. A peramid plan works well. That being sets of 8, 6, 4, 2 with increased weight every set.
+2
Your heart rate needs get up to 150+ and stay there for at least 30 minutes. If your not getting your heart rate up high enough your waisting time.
The first place the body wants to create fat is around the mid-section and the last place it wants to take it off, goes back to our cave man days, kill a mastedon they feasted and it was famine till they killed the next one so nature wants the human body to put on fat to get by during the times of famine. Take in more calories than you burn, your body creates fat cells. Burn more calories then you consume, your body de-hydrates the fat cells when it needs the energy but you never loose them and your body wants to re-hydrate them, that's why it is so hard to loose fat especialy around the middle and 9 out of 10 diets fail in one year or less. Weights build more muscle which burn more calories and raises your resting metabolic rate so while your sleeping or watching tv your body is burning more calories. That's the key, resting meatabolic rate, calorie intake and making a committed life style change and not just a diet. I'm 55, 5'-10", 160 lbs. and have been doing this for 15 years and it's a dailey battle to keep the pot-belly off. If you don't take care of your body when your younger the doctor will be when your older, good luck and be strong.
Wow! Didn't expect this much feedback... slightly overwhelming. Lots of good advice, and much less ball-busting than I expected. I'll try to hit on a couple of the responses...
I do appreciate the meth, booze and cigs diet... thanks Tireless! I kinda did that diet in college (not meth, but lets just say it wasnt healthy). For the record, it did work!
No, not usmarinekurt. Not moving to Ethiopia, no surgery, not doing any wierd pills or whatever, and no, I will not be submitting photos, creep!
Not leaving the wife, and not picking up another. Who the hell has time for that?
I know the calorie counting is a popular method. I might give it a try for a few days just to see what my average is, but i eat a pretty regular diet. I dont see it changing much as far as calories go. After dinner usually involves getting the kids cleaned up and put to bed, house straightened or whatever, then bed for myself. I cant see me sitting at the table doing math while my wife cleans up. I dont get laid enough as it is... dont want to make it worse!
I eat well now. No fast food, very little processed $hit. I usually dont eat breakfast... just not hungry in the am. For lunch, I usually have a "leftover sandwich" or a PB & J (yes, I'm a cheap-ass). I do like a slice of pizza a couple times a week though. Dinner is a meat, starch & veggies. I do admit to eating alot of red meat, but we do have lots of chicken & pork too, starch is generally potatoes of some sort, and broccoli (which is the only vegetable my little boy eats, so thats all I eat.) Never eat dessert or anything like that. I drink very little soda, maybe one a week. Overall, i think i eat pretty healthy simply due to what i like. Not a big sugar person. I'm an avid gardener, so i eat tons of veggies.
I drink alot of coffee (cream & sugar) & water. I am a drinker, but i did cut out beer about a year ago and switched to Vodka & either cranberry or tonic. Thinking about it, I will be switching over to all tonic or soda water. No chance I'm cutting out the booze though... my job is way too stressful.
I generally sit on my butt 10 hours a day at work. My previous job was a little more active, and i had more free time, so i was more active after work and what-not. Never had a need to excercize. It's catching up to me now.
Right now, I do 40 minutes on the treadmill. Combination of a medium paced run on a flat surface to a fast walk on a steep incline. It is a 2.6 mile program and I work up a pretty good sweat. My knees are not the best, so I'm not going to push it any more on the mill. I have though about trading it in for a rowing machine or something similar. Following that, I do about 20 to 25 minutes of miscellaneous excercize. I always do 50 sit-ups, sometimes it's 100. I bench press, curl and then lift some dumbells, uh, somehow. Don't really have a set routine with them, just lift them repetitively in different ways. I feel like I should have a set routine.
I think i'll check out the website mentioned by fishinmaniac. But, from the feedback so far, I think I'm on the right track. Sounds like I need to lift heavier weights. I've been lifting lighter weights with more repititions.
