Hell, the Japanese had that 100's of years ago -- Nijo castle in Kyoto:

... specially designed wooden floors called "uguisu bari" or Nightingale Floors. Designed to creak and squeak whenever walked upon, the floors prevented anyone from sneaking around in the castle without being heard, even if they were in bare or padded feet. The creaking is produced when someone walks on the floor because the clamps used to fix the floorboards rub against holes in the boards.

Walking in the halls of Nijo castle makes a squeaking noise and a metallic rattle noise, like someone shaking a length of chain. Actually, it is not an unpleasant sound, hence the name "nightingale", as if a bird was singing. It is nothing like a bird singing but it is kind of a cool sound.

Nah, to claim it is a nightingale floor there must also be a 50-meter wide moat around the house.

Nightengale floors. Cool. Thanks for the tip. I have to mention that to the admiral when she asks me when I'm going to fix all the squesks in the flloor. Up til now, I just say that they give the place "character".

Unless your being burglarized by Klan members your probably safe.

ALWAYS call the police yourself if you are home when the alarm rings. Do not just rely on the monitoring company.

There is a DEFFINATE difference in response between 1. this is Brinks, the alarm at xyz is ringing. and 2. This is mr x, I can hear someone breaking into my home . My wife and I are barricaded in the bedroom located on the north east corner of the home. I am armed and will use deadly force if needed.

situation 1 gets you the 90 minute response

situaton 2 gets you three cars and the county helicopter in 3 mintues...

This is from experience.... Also no matter how much training you have, unless there are loved ones down the hall etc, NEVER try and clear a house by yourself. Another lesson learned....It just is not worth it..

I don't know if this was mentioned (I didn't read the whole thread)... but one of the biggest mistakes people make with these alarm systems is that -- if they are silent -- and rely only on the outbound call, they are a waste of money. If you have exposed utilities, the wire is often cut. Now you have nothing. If you don't go with a radio (and/or cell backup) you're wasting your money. If you have a lot of neighbors and a very good system (no false activations) then you MAY be able to get away with a landline + loud attention getter. Keep in mind noise isn't the only way to attract attention!! Light flashing, red dome/cycle lights, etc.

And if you really want the VERY BEST alarm... get a dog. 85% of home intrusions are done in homes without a dog.

Naturally, if, God forbid, you're home during an intrusion, having a firearm (and being sure everyone you love is behind the stock) is another great choice.

And, lastly, if you tend to not know if your windows are locked, or how many locks are on each window (from memory) -- you're probably going to have problems.

For my house in Maine the alarm co calls the house first then PD/Fire. After those calls they call me by cell or land line leaving a VM if I don't answer. From that point the list runs down thru various friends who have keys and alarm codes. I made their codes easy, the last 4 of their tel numbers. The calling stops once they have made contact with a real person other that dispatch. If it's just a low heat warning they call me then the gas company. If it's just the gen set running me only. Sometimes they screw up on who they are calling but nothing major.

Both here and the cape properties they call the house then PD/Fire. After that both my numbers, then our office. She always knows where everyone is both near and far. If there is still no contact (very unlikely) I have friends on the FD who have the master key to the houses here and on the cape there's a bunch of contractors who I fully trust with keys, codes, and know how.

Contractors know if they get called I'm willing to pay full travel both ways and repairs if needed. For my friends I usually will do something like dinner, drunk, or both.

NY and GA have security people on site. The only time NY calls is to tell us something broke on the 63rd flr and is leaking to 62 or worse. In that case the building has a full staff to handle the problem(s). I only get the problem fixed for good and damages repaired to the unit. Other effected property is not mine to woory about.

With cell phones and emails it's pretty hard not to be found unless I'm playing in the woods up north. I'd think you must have someone who can know the ropes to stop a small problem from getting bigger till you get yourself or the right people involved. I've pulled off some fancy stuff over the years while in the middle of nowhere snowmobiling.
